Who's your top contender for the perennial "director/film/actor/actress/etc. the Academy is going to screw this year" award?
I'm putting my money on Sean Penn. Haven't seen Mystic River, but I hear he is amazing in it. However the Academy generally doesn't go for "bad boy" types. At least not until they are older and get it for something the don't deserve it for (i.e., Pacino in Scent of a Woman).
Your thoughts?
Sean

I don't know that Sean Penn deserved it. While he was great in some scenes, some of what he did went over the top, like the scene when he was playing the Incredible Hulk, knocking policemen to the ground and screaming into the air. Most of his performance was nice and understated like I'd expect that character to be, but some of it was not so hot. I don't know that a loss would be a snub, per se.
Bill Murray was good, but was really just playing an extension of himself... I'd actually say if Depp got snubbed, it would be of note (since he really did create an entirely unique character)
But as sad as this is, I see LotR getting snubbed for directing. I don't know why, but I've got this gut feeling.

The only way she's getting an oscar is if she tips over one of the big ones outside the building and straps it to the top of her car. ;)

Well, guess they proved me wrong. Though from what Justin says, maybe it was one of those "you've waited long enough" kind of gimmes for Sean Penn. Guess I'll just have to see Mystic River to find out.
And how about poor Return of the King. Couldn't win for losing!
Sean ;)

Both Johnny Depp and Bill Murray are due for an Oscar soon. Unfortunately the roles that they generally play are not the "serious drama" kind like Penn's in Mystic River. The voters place more importance on dramatic roles than comedic ones. I guess Penn himself is also due for one of those Oscars as he's been nominated 3 times before.
