Hmm, I have a pretty big collection and I don't have the Godfather trilogy. Besides, Coppola just made "The Godfather" so he could get the money to make a real movie, "The Conversation."
I bet I have more Iranian documentaries than most people, though. :)

I notice alot of people on here don't have classics like Citizan Kane, Casablanca, basically all the Alfred Hitchcocks (except Topaz and Family Plot) even his silent films are good like The Lodger, The Ring and his 30's british films The Young and Innnocent, Sabotage, 39 Steps and The lady Vanishes those two are must haves for any collection but you gotta go Criterion on those two. Enough about ol Hitchcock, there's King Kong that just got releases, and one of my favorite movies ever To Kill A Mockingbird, not having that movie in your collection is like not having the Godfather Trilogy in your set and calling it a DVD collection, chh phh chh.

Wow! 2,000 DVDs. What an accomplishment! But he's probably bordering on "Cinemania" (a great documentary about film-obsessed New Yorkers).
Oh! Here's a chance to plug my website:

I've had the website going since September 18, but I'm just now really starting to get into it. At first, it really sucked and looked nothing like it does now. Then, I created a logo and added pages and a few other things to make it better. It stayed that way for a while, and just recently I moved it to a new domain, 0catch. I'm really hoping I can stay dedicated to it this time. Now, if I could only get that reviews page off the ground...
And no more shameless plugs here. One-time thing. Elsewhere, however...:D

"Yipes! I review and only have around 400! And that feels excessive to me, since I rarely re-watch movies these days."
Likewise, a lot of people ask me, well why don't you just rent if you're only going to watch a few time?
My value in my movies goes beyond the ratio of how much it would cost me to rent the movie as many times as I watch it vs the price of buying. It's just nice to have that convenience of being able to go to that movie whenever you want.

Well, I don't have nearly as many as all of you. Only 195 right now.
I wonder how often people watch movies from their collections? I have a roommate who has almost as many DVDs as I do, but he never seems to watch them. Most he buys, watches once and then never seems to go back to it. That doesn't make much sense to me.
Although my collection is small, I'm happy to say that I've watched and re-watched 153 of the DVDs from my own collection this year alone. (Yes, I'm a DVD addict who is obsessive about keeping track of what I watch and when). So I'm curious to know if any one else out there with a huge DVD collection watches as often?
If I ever showed you my DVD collection spreadsheet, you'd probably have me commited.

I've only got 151 DVDs that are here in the database. I have a bunch of movies that have spawned from the internet (Freddy Vs Ghostbusters anyone?) and a whole lot of movies I'd be ashamed to list (tons of movies that are so far beyond guilty pleasure.) I've also got a few boxes of public domain movies that were thrown 5 to a double sided DVD in 50 movie packs that a friend gave me too, so if I had to guess I would probably have close to 400 movies. But still compared to most people I know the DVDs I have outnumber theirs 20 to 1 in some cases.
Anyone with more than 50 DVDs has the same problem of finding something to watch.

It’s really scary to even imagine a home collection with more than 2.000 dvd’s .
Few questions:
1.How much it takes to watch all the dvd’s for a second time. ( not to take into consideration that collection is still growing )
2.How much place is needed to store all the dvd’s in your home?
My home collection is negligible compared to some aforementioned: only 21 dvd's
:D

I'm at a measly 192 titles in my collection. I consider myself a movie buff, and usually have to purchase the top titles (e.g. "Star Wars", "LOTR", etc.), I've even got 111 in my wish list, but, as a student I have had time to take account of my purchasing habits. Once I'm among you employed people again, I do plan on buying a lot of the titles on my wish list, however, my measly 192 titles at about $20 per title comes to $3,840!!! I look at those of you that have 400, 500, 600 plus movies, and I shudder to think what that comes out to be! Granted, that total comes gradually over the years, disc by disc, but wow is that a lot of money to blow on movies! That doesn't even count the amount of money you may have spent in the theater on each film!!
As I mentioned, since I've been a "starving student" I can think of a TON of other and better things I can spend that kind of dough on. Not to mention putting it in an IRA or 401k plan. Dang, I think I'm starting to show my "old" stripes. ;)

Heheh, I only have about 50 DVDs in my collection. As a college student, I can't afford the space and it's a hassle to move them between semesters. Also, it's hard to keep up with my other expensive (for a student) hobbies like PC upgrading and photography.
Hoever, I CAN boast about my very high repeat viewing of all my DVDs. I only buy DVDs of movies that I really like, so rewatching them is almost never a problem :)

WOW A few of you put my collecton to shame I just bought DVD number 548 today. but that number is a bit deceptive because trilogies and box sets are counted as one and all my series of Highlander, Quantum Leap, Star Trek, DS9 and TNG are each counted as one DVD. So maybe I am not that far away from San Jose Shark.
P.S. San Jose Shark,
Go Red Wings, and Bruins. Yes I know the Bruins suck but I have loved them since I was 5, can't through 20 years of loyalty out the window. Good thing I have loved the Wings just as long or I'd be one depressed Hockey fan.

Depression,
I guess I should come clean... a fair portion of my DVDs (around 1/3) come from Blockbuster's "previously viewed" section, or pawn shops, for around $7 or $8 each. Thats not bad, but I'd much rather have the $5 price, Depression! ;)
Justin,
With all of my bills, as a full time student I'm barely able to have $15 or $20 per month for entertainment. Since I'm not working, student loans and the GI Bill are my only sources of income.
That's cool you're going after your Masters. I'm glad that a Masters in my field "Animation", is relatively useless. 4 years of school for a Batchelors is enough for me for now, I think. I've still got 3 to go! In the grand scheme of things, 3 years is such a small amount of time, but when school is all you do, day in, and day out, 4 years seems more like 10!
Chin,
The way you get around it as a student, is you find a box that holds all of your DVDs perfectly, keep them in there, and when you move into a new place, you just stand the box on it's side and use it as your shelf! ;) :D

You met Bobby Orr? damn you are lucky...the old Boston Garden was sweet and i saw the Sharks play there back when they were just an expansion team but HORRIBLE!, they went 11-71-2 their second season and the last at the Cow Palace where they played their first two seasons before moving to the Shark Tank in San Jose. The new Fleet Center is nothing compared to the old Garden but it's alright. I have never been to Chicago to see the Sharks play before but that's definitely on top of my list of places to see them play.
GO SHARKS AND MIGHTY JOE THORNTON! we now have the number 1 and 2 picks in the 97 class, with Patty Marleau going second. The Sharks have never had a first overall pick and they have had some BAD seasons, maing.

San Jose Shark,
I got to agree with you. Must be nice having a real NHL team that you can see and go to road games for. I live in Milwaukee. NO NHL team sucks. But I do see Chicago games when I can. I've been to Bosten one time with my grandma for her 70th birthday. Bobby Orr met us at the game, wish the Bruins could pick up that calibur of tallent again.

Hey DMWarner, thanks for Joe Thornton! six game win streak since he's come here. I've flown out to Boston before to see the Sharks play and had beer thrown all over my old Pat Falloon jersey from the Sharks first season 91-92. I plan on flying out there next month for the Sharks three game road trip starting in Boston then Ottawa and then Montreal then I come back home to San Jose. You guys did get two quality players in Sturm and Stuart, i even have a Sturm jersey. But your GM had his head up his you know what on this trade. ;)

I have gotten picky over the years on the movies I will go see and most likely those movies I will get on DVD or my wife will get. 164 is small but it will grow.

I've got around 200 (too lazy to get a precise count), but since 1997 I've purchased selectively, deliberately keeping my collection down to a realistic number. My criterion is that it has to be a film that I know I'll revisit and study many times. BTW, I watch about 300 films a year, half of which are repeat viewings. And since there are only so many movie-viewing hours per year, I doubt I'll ever exceed 300, including HDDVDs, because if you do the math, it would be impossible to see each enough times before the grim reaper comes knocking to justify a purchase versus a rental.
I've got a majority of the AFI's top 100, my favorites in world cinema (Bergman, Kieslowski, Ray, Kurosawa, Herzog, etc.), a few pesonal favorites (all Tarantino films, Oldboy, Takeshi Kitano movies, blah, blah, blah) and films that are just fun and look really cool on my HDTV, like the original SW trilogy. Sorry, but the prequels blow. I know it's hard for you fanboys to realize it now, but I'll bet the farm that historical perspective will vindicate me. In fact, I've already seen Sith listed on "10 Worst Films of 2005" lists. But that's cool, my motto is "film is subjective," so if you liked them, I'm happy for you. At least you didn't feel like you wasted your money *and* two hours of your life watching them like I did. :D
