I don't know about anyone else, and I don't have the sales figures, but am I the only one who is buying less and less DVD's? So far this year, all I have bought was King Kong and Bambi for my daughter. Am I alone on this? Are we buying less? And if so, why? For me the quality just isn't there.

It may be that a lot of folks have already bought their favorite movies on DVD and now are being more selective about their buying.

I don't have my personal numbers handy right now, but I think I'm ahead of last year right now, owing to the fact I didn't have a job for a lot fo 2005. :)

But we are gearing up to the onslaught of HD discs very soon. Plus, like John said, most of the "good" stuff is already out. We're onto the second and third releases of a lot of stuff right now.

My buying has slowed way down because I've become more selective in whether I feel the movie has a lot of repeat value. A lot of the DVDs I have now I seldom watch because I'm simply bored with them. There are times I'll stare at my collection for an hour trying to decide on something to watch. It is during these times I realize that perhaps watching some films over and over could be a complete waste of time. Therefore, I only purchase something I now I will at least watch more than once. Besides, I rent from Netflix and that's like having your own personal library.

Oh not me, if anything I think I'm buying more. Just last week I bought 4 seasons of Friends, King Kong, Chronicles of Narnia and I hope to buy Robot Chicken before the month is through. I'm not too worried about HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, because some movies I don't care too much about having that extra added detail (I receive High Definition Video from my Rogers Digital Cable, and while it is amazing, it's not something that I absolutely can't live without, nor do I feel I can't watch a movie due to the picture quality. The transfer of Dark City is an example of a near flawless transfer that I can't imagine being much better, but I guess I'll see), and the select few that I do (Jurassic Park, LOTR, Star Wars) I have no problem buying again (after I find out which is the winning format, but by that time we might have the next format on the doorstep). I hope that the prices of DVD's continue to decline (although you always get the rare exception that costs so freaking much you can't believe it, like the 2-disc edition of Munich) and look forward to continually building my collection.

Sorry for all the tangents (Lord knows I can't do without them).

i've slowed down quite a bit too but not cause of hd-dvd. 1 cause of $$$ and 2 cause of... I have too darn many as it is. lately i've been trading with local cd wharehouse to get rid of some I realize I won't be watching again. and actually getting descent money for them and buying hit movies for very cheap as well. they even had some new release movies for way less than the retail stores. I figure if I can't afford to buy right now, then maybe I can make my collection do the buying for me right now. :D

Lately I've been buying more random movies instead of going out on Tuesdays to scope out the new releases. Like Jason, I didn't have a job for much of last year between school and family crap, so now I'm cathing up on the stuff I missed and then just random impulse buys. Jason, I just got the Planet of the Apes Legacy set last week and thought it was unusual that you got it at almost the same time.

^ You can add the high price for Walk the Line and Jarhead's two disc editions as the reason I don't have them either. They're both in my Netflix list, so I'll be watching them eventually.
