I have not yet seen the "Walking Tall" remake with The Rock, but I was interested in the trailers and the storyline so I rented the original "Walking Tall" made in 1975 and starring Joe Don Baker. I was very surprised. I expected it to be some cheesy, brainless action flick but it turned out to be a very gritty, realistic cop drama-thriller in the same vein as "Dirty Harry", "Death Wish" or "Serpico". While "Walking Tall" is not quite as classic as the aforementioned films, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had a very poor DVD with bad picture/sound and a scene selection as the only special feature. You'd think that they'd re-release this in the wake of the remake but I haven't heard anything about it. A better DVD is deserved with a film this good that spawned two sequels (with Bo Svenson replacing Joe Don Baker) and a current remake, but I don't think it is going to happen. While the trailers make the remake look a little bit more comedic, less graphic (the remake is PG-13 while the original is a solid R rating) and less realistic, I think I may still go to it in theater. If you saw the remake, I highly reccomend the original. It'll probably be better than you expect.
