If you've seen Kill Bill vol 2, then you would know QT and his appreciation for asian films are bringing Hero to the states. From what I hear an august release date is the popular assumption?
I was suggested this movie on an anime forum long before I saw the trailer at KB2 so I had bought the HK dvd-9 version. From what I've read the dvd-9 version is equivelent to that of a Superbit as opposing to the dvd-5 version sold on amazon.
Finally, America will witness Jet Li in a respectable role.

OMG I can't wait for that movie! What is irritating though, is that this movie has been "on its way" to the US for about 6 months, if not longer! I heard about it and saw the trailer a long time ago. At first I thought maybe I had missed it and it came and went. Thankfully they put the trailer in Kill Bill. And when is the release date?
COMING SOON
Ahhhhh! They still don't know when! I hope August is correct, be a nice B-Day Present :)

I saw the preview of Hero yesterday. It looks big, epic, and loaded with some cool eye candy. I'm looking forward to seeing this one.

be warned--if you don't know much about chinese history (both ancient and recent), then you might hate the movie. some will like it based purely on its visual style and martial arts choreography, but those of you looking for a "story" will likely leave thinking, "wtf?"
more than anything, "hero" is a very chinese movie. there are several minutes devoted to how to write the character for "sword", and there are several minutes devoted to a concept known as "all under the heavens" that relates specifically to the belief that china should be united (something that western countries have actively tried to undermine as seen with their support of the dalai lama). if discussions of how to write a word and why china should be united sound boring to you, then you will hate "hero".

Eddie, I was wondering if you could explain the meaning behind each of the colors as it is obvious they change correspondingly to the story.

as far as i can tell, the color schemes only indicate the different truths, as in, when the color changes, another truth is being told. there might be a deeper meaning, but i'm not aware of it. :(

There is the domestic trailer. Is it just me or is it really misleading and actually kind of spoilerish if you pay close enough attention?

Depression, I found this somewhere on the Internet:
"In the flashbacks, the characters' costumes go from red (imagination) to blue (perceived reality) to white (truth). In the final flashback, the costumes are green (enlightenment/peace)."

the trailer is bad for two reasons:
1) it gives away what happens to jet li's character;
2) it makes it look as if the king sent the assassins after jet li ("he must fight past the kingdom's deadliest assassins to get at his true target") when this isn't the plot at all.
the images sure look pretty though; i hope that the film is NOT cut down, as has been the case with so many non-american movies touched by the weinstein hands.

From what I've read the movie was cut down to begin with....
"Miramax owns the rights to this film in some world markets, including the United States, where it has yet to be released in any form. According to this site, Miramax actually forced director Zhang Yimou to edit the original 120 minute film by 30 minutes, claiming that American audience would not sit and tolerate a film that long. To satisfy their needs, Yimou edited the film down to 98 minutes, and this is the version that has been shown around the world, including China. However, he is planning to release the unedited 120 minute version on DVD in Hong Kong and China very soon, although there are no plans to release the unedited version for the big screen"

thanks, "fenghis khan"
hopefully my sweet 7th grade education will hold up well through out the story, just enough to see some cool fights.

well, my post wasn't meant to offend anyone's level of knowledge; it's just that i've met people who were irritated by the movie's narrative because they didn't understand what the big fuss was (about killing one very important historical figure, that is).
