My God, first, look at this new pic from Harry Potter: the Prisoner of Akzaban.

And tell me does that scene not REEK of low quality fx poo?

What's the deal with the CLEARLY added in bush in the left corner (it's too smooth and devoid of grain). And check out the blue screen outline galore on that little guy with the wand. Potter and the girl also look out of place. Just like the crappy bushes in the foreground, they look flat and too pristine to blend in with the rest of the scene (eg the sky).

Come on, that pic is taken completely out-of-context... it's a still shot, it's not in its proper aspect ratio... This is why I think studios shouldn't release anything like this, and should just let a movie ride on its merits as a film, not as a trailer or a still-shot. But that wouldn't give them the big first-week box office so it'll never happen.

I think you could do the same with LOTR or any movies that set special fx standards and make them look crappy when a still is taken from the shot as Justin pointed out.

That does look pretty bad, but I'm sure while in motion it won't be worth griping about.

"it's a still shot, it's not in its proper aspect ratio"

The aspect ratio is 2.35 to 1 (simple math: 2048/871 = 2.354...)

The least they could do is blend the effects elements in properly. Nothing ruins a composite shot more than mismatched elements. But then again I'm more picky than most people.

YCH,

You're asking for a "real-ness" that doesn't exist. Even in the "LOTR" movie(s), you could still see what was real and what was digital. Remember when Aragorn and Frodo were on that leaning stairway in "LOTR 1"? It was obvious that the thing was shot against a blue- or green-screen. However, no one complained because it's understood that there are limitations to image verisimilitude.

The animation in Final Fantasy was stunning, and there were some great voices, but I didn't like the film itself. I was never a fan of the video games, and i found it too self-important and unnecessarily philosophical much like everyone else here thinks of the Matrix sequels, which I like.

Justin,

Watch "Final Fantasy" if you want to be wowed by CG animation. In my book, it still hasn't been beat yet. "Finding Nemo" and "Shrek 2" both look plastic-y, so the 3D effect isn't as impressive as the photorealism of some "Final Fantasy" sequences.

Yeah, verisimillitue must be made-up, it doesn't sound very true-to-life at all.

Ahem.

Speaking of FX, has anyone seen Shrek 2 yet? There are a couple of shots in there that had my jaw on the floor. Specs floating around in beams of light, little touches like the way hair sat, small textures, and lush settings. How beautiful.

Tell me about it. I am going to sign up for therapy because of Eddie´s language. Ask him about the nouns that he makes up using verbs.
