I'm posting this seperate thread for AVP as a review of what everyone thinks/thought after seeing the film. Judging by the preconcieved notions I've run into both here at DVD Town, and from personal friends of mine... I might be the only person in the world thinking that AVP might turn out to be a well done movie. Everyone else seems to think it's going to be crap. Granted, from some of the lines we've been exposed to (e.g. "you ugly son of a...") and the PG-13 rating, it doesn't bode well. However, I still have high hopes. The link given by Tony in the "Alien Vs. Predator Full Length Trailer!!" thread, showing a 30 second snippit of one specific fight scene looked particularly cool to me! The Predator takes the Alien by a leg and SLAMS it's head through 3 rock walls before tossing it a good distance away! That scene got me VERY pumped, probably on a psychological level. Maybe something like envisioning myself as being the Predator, to give payback to the Alien for scaring me so many times over the years!

I think I'll take a pre-emptive fence sitting position...

If AVP turns out bad... I'm sorry I for blathering on and on about it. :.(

If AVP turns out awesome... I TOLD YOU SO!!! :p:p:p :D

For 7 years I have been a huge fan of the 'Alien' franchise, and the 'Predator' franchise for that matter, and for almost 2 years I have been waiting for this film, then I found out it's writer, and it's director, and the cast, and the length, and the rating. And try as I might I just don't think this film will be on par with any thing we have seen, even Predator 2 which was a shallow flop. Granted I will love this movie, just becuase it has Aliens in it. But this film, I can say with some certainty, having watched a few scenes on yahoo, just looks awful. The camera is always panning around them like it's sliding. The dialogue is atrocious: "We're expendable... we've just been expended." What is that!? And most of the actors don't even speak english properly (not a racial slur... but this film needs competent english speasking actors). However I give that awful director points for trying to do the effects practical and not a lot of CG. That's about it. :(

Well, from the looks of it, as much as I'd "like" AVP to be a good movie, opinions seem to be unanimous. Almost every critic out there is commenting about AVP not having screenings until the night before it's release being a HUGE sign that the movie is a flop. That just sucks! I'm still going to see it regardless.

I've heard people say that nothing has been cut from the movie, so the possibility of a "Directors cut" of AVP with an "R" rating is unlikely.

Do any of the Staff know if this is a possibility, or will you not know until DVD plans are made?

From what I gather after checking out RT, this is one of those "no pre-screeners for critics review." Generally when studios put the breaks on any reviews before release day they wind up being garbage.

Personally I don't care for A.V.P. The only reason I will see this film is because I got a free ticket in the Predator DVD. I might have to think.. The whole premise of the movie sucks. Just because Fox owns these 2 characters doesn't mean we have to see AVP. How about Frodo meeting Neo in LOTR Meets Matrix?:). And considering Anderson's resume, I have no high hopes from this movie. Cool action sequences and effects does not make a good movie.

Dude, there is only one decent outcome to this movie, with the Predators destroying the Aliens and the humans. Obviously, the Predators are sentient beings with better technology than humans. The Aliens are just beasts. But you know what? They probably have the humans winning, so the movie is already garbage on a logical level. (n)

So you're saying you're going to take the "Triumph" approach to AVP and "poop" on it?! ;):D

It's all good, I'm just a huge fan, and am glad to see both Aliens & Predators on the big screen again.

"mortal kombat" was good only because it had momentum. however, his other movies have been boring or flat-out illogical ("resident evil"). this is a guy who believes in banging viewers' heads and ears until they are numb. that is NOT good cinema!!!

Aw, c'mon now Eddie... Paul Anderson's not all that bad now is he? Didn't you say once that you liked "Mortal Kombat"?;) Granted, Paul's track record isn't good, but I liked "Event Horizon". That was a pretty scary movie.

I don't know... I think I'll stand by my fence sitting position.
