do i need an HDTV to enjoy the full benefits of a dvd player w/ faroudja technology? from what i've read, i understand you need an HDTV to notice the improvement in picture quality seen w/ a progressive scan player. but, do i need an HDTV to be able to see the benefits of Bad Edit Detection, Chroma Processing, etc. seen in players w/ faroudja technology? i don't have an HDTV and i'm wondering if i should save some money and just buy a player w/ regular progressive scan. all the players i'm considering buying have progressive scan so buying a player without progressive scan is not an option.

it probably depends on how much money you have to spend on a/v equipment. generally, you hear about people using faroudja with hdtvs because, guess what? people who can afford nice hdtvs usually can afford extra bells and whistles to enhance their viewing experience.

The difference between regular TVs and HDTVs is quite big, so while HDTV will let you enjoy the "full benefits" of the Faroudja/DCDI processing unit, keep in mind HDTVs will also reveal weaknesses of the DVD format (ie low resolution and some compression artifacts when displayed on a huge, ultra-high-res display - like an HDTV)

i can afford a faroudja dvd player right now, but not an HDTV. will i notice an enhancement in picture quality using a faroudja dvd player on a CRT tv? i have a CRT tv and i'm wondering if i should get a faroudja dvd player or save some money and buy a regular progressive scan player. obviously, if i won't notice an enhancement in picture quality on my CRT tv then a faroudja player would be a waste of money. thanks in advance.

You have to know what type of person you are. If you're the type who isn't fussy about video quality, then you don't have to bother to spend more money on an expensive DVD player. Conversely, if you're very picky about video quality and notice and appreciate even little improvements, my guess is you'll be okay with spending extra cash on a high end DVD player.

*if you're asking for my personal opinion, I say go for it! You might find yourself pleased! But in case you can't decide, try to go to a hifi store and test it out...by then you'll be able to decide for sure :)

well, how old is your tube tv? if it's more than five years old, then it won't be worth the money getting a faroudja dvd player because only the newest tvs (and they'd have to be flat-screens) will benefit from the razzle-dazzle.
