Radio Shack Stores are selling these DVD Players at a reasonable price:

- EXTERNAL LINK -
(copy and paste to browser)

...still a good price w/tax at under $45.00

I've throughly checked out this product and it performs very well.

It's lightweight, easy to operate, and DOES support DVD+R also -
(contrary to the 'product features' list on website)

Also provides a good remote control, red/white connector cables (upgradable if desired),
eaay to read manual and includes the manufacturer's standard ONE-YEAR warranty.

The downsides:

-No power ON/OFF 'light' anywhere on the unit, but turns OFF via remote or front button
-The THREE front manual buttons are NOT lighted, but easy to recall & operate
-Remote Control uses lithium watch-type battery, but should last for years;
Has many buttons on it, but distinguishable for using all functions
-The DVD Holder is approx 1/2-inch blue plastic, but opens smoothly and is very sturdy;
Requires AUTO close - not for manually 'pushing-in' the DVD on the Holder (which isn't the rule anyway!)
-No TIMER display on front of unit or via screen remote

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I was strolling around the Mall yesterday christmas shopping when I realized that the dvd/vhs player that my parents gave me is still broken and I had yet to replace it. So I dashed down to RadioShack where I was touring the store when I found the desay for forty five dollars (forty really then tax then warranty equals forty eight.) Anyways I knew better than to just pick up a less than one hundred dollar piece of technology and call it a day, so I asked mr. "Tim" to come over and give me some background info. He said it was one of the best they had, it's a great new system, I asked if it would crap out in a year like the dvd/vhs I had before he said "no way." So I said ok..and then of course he picks it up and says "are you getting it?" while half way to the desk.

So I bought it.

I brought it home watched Hellboy on it. It was fantastic. I watched Green Mile on it, it was very fantastic.

I put spider-Man 2 in, and I couldn't get past the credits without it skipping. So I restarted the system and watched it, same thing.

I tried National Treasure, same problem.

Peter Pan, same problem.

Skipping, major major skipping.

Equivilant to what the previous dvd player had been doing to me.

WHat should I do about this? Could it be a terribel coincedence and all those dvd's are more scratched than they appear (Spider-Man is perfect might I add.) Or is it that Desay just sucks?
If that's so, should I call this phone number in the manual or will they sort of beat around the bush with me? SHould I just bring it back to "Tim" at Radio Shack and tell him where he can put it and ask for my forty dollars back?

I'm not too sure, I'm gonna give each of those discs another try in one hour and then again tomorrow. If it's still acting up by Monday I'm gonna make a decision as to how to react.

Thanks for reading such a detailed first post.

When something doesn't work out of the box, you should bring it back and either get a refund or a new machine. Do not keep the defective player, and do not send it back to the manufacturer.

My cheapie $59 Sony, by the way, the one I use upstairs in the bedroom with the little 21" TV by the bed, is still working fine after a year and half. I don't use it to review anything, but it's good enough for casual viewing.

Can I get the exact same one just a replacement? Or should I get the money back and invest into something else. Cuz I'm watching last samurai menu screen right now and it's skipping pretty badly. Really badly actually.

If you bought it at Radio Shack, they're pretty good about refunding money. If you think it was just a fluke that you got a bad machine, ask for an exchange. If you don't want to hassle with it any longer, just tell them exactly what the machine's doing and that you don't want to take the chance on getting another defective unit. Then go and buy a cheap name brand.
