DVD Freezes up usually after at least 1 1/2 hrs of playing

Was wondering if anyone could provide advice. I have an AKAI DVD player with a microphone hook-up in the front.

The DVD at one point simply freezes up and stops playing. Problem occurs usually after at least an hour and a half into playing a DVD. This happens for all DVDs (new ones and old). I even tried cleaning it with one of those lens cleaner DVDs with the two tiny brushes, did not work.

My next step would be to take it to a repair shop.

Any advice would be much apreciated.

Thanks ... Jesse

Buy a new one, over here in the uk we get dvd players as cheap as 30 squids which is nothing. Probably cost that to take it to a repair shop anyway.

I agree with Scotster. If your player freezes up at the same point, it sounds like it may no longer be making the jump to hyperspace; that is, the laser is no longer able to change layers. The layer changeover on most discs comes at around the 80-minute mark, about the same place you say your machine freezes up.

Unless you own a really expensive machine, it would be more economical to buy a new player. To get the old one fixed would probably cost a minimum of $75, and a lot more if extensive parts and labor are involved. A new low-priced Sony player can cost as little as $50-$60, and there are a lot of cheaper players around, too.

Thanks for the advice. I will start looking for a new player. I did not initially want to get a new player cause I remember what a hassle it was in getting my old one. It wasn't too pricy, just hard to find. Not to many places sell DVD's with a microphone hook-up for Karaoke sing-a-longs. Well, I went through it before so it shouldn't be too bad this time around.

thanks again ... Jesse

One other possibility Jesse t, is that your player may be overheating. It might take that 1 1/2 hours to get to a catastrophic thermal level. Make sure your DVD player has plenty of breathing room behind, and above it, and try watching a DVD again before you decide to junk it. My previous Sony DVD player had a similar issue, with differing errors directly resulting from an overheating issue.
