It seems to me during the '70's through the '80's and early '90's "R" was where the money was. For example, all of the "Hack 'n slash" flicks that came out of the '80's. Or the sci-fi/bloodbath movie's of the "Robocop" series. Now we've got scary movies like "The Others", "The Mothman Prophesies", and coming out this month "The Forgotten" that are all PG-13. I'm not sure what's caused the trend change from "R" to "PG-13", but I'm glad it's here. I think Hollywood has relied too long on SFX, and CG. Now we're coming back to good 'ol story telling.

I think it's fair to say that studios realized that movies can make more money as PG-13, because quite simply more people can them. Also, I think more people aged 10-17 are going to movies now than in the 80's. Is that true? I was born in 1981, so I only went to movies with my parents when I was that young and I dont remember going that often. It just seems like nowadays, more movies are geered toward 15-17 olds than anybody else...

Also add in the fact that the ratings system seems to be MUCH more lenient. I think many of the PG-13 movies out now would be contenders for an R rating films 10 or so years ago.

Depression,

Good point. However, I'm not sure any of the films I mentioned would be candidates for an "R" rating. I think they're still "mild" enough, that they'd probably only receive a PG-13 rating. I could be wrong, and maybe we're all just desensitized now by what's being shown on TV, but these films seem within the same parameters.

Right, and I wasn't questioning your judgement on those movies (though the way I stated my msg may look that way), I was just stating an observation :D.

For kids that want to go see movies it is great. I remember when I was a kid my selection of PG-13 and under movies was very limited. Of course now that I'm 20 the sides have reversed.

Cool.

Yeah, it does seem like there's a larger selection of PG-13 movies now.

I'm just glad that "good movies" no longer need to incorporate graphic violence, sex scenes, or gob's of gore!
