I'd like to thank Yunda Eddie Feng for reviewing all the DS9 dvds. Many places don't have the time to review tv show releases, and its great that DVD town does.

On that note however.... :)

from the ds9 season 7 review:

" Also, it’s true that the writing for “DS9” had many more layers than the writing for the other shows, but the layering can often be on the awkward side of things. “Voyager” was the writers’ showcase for developing complex narrative threads without betraying various cracks and seams."

Woah woah woah. Now I admittedly haven't seen Voyager since it originally aired, and only a few dozen episodes have I seen twice, but I have to disagree on this point. The thing I really dislike about Voyager was the LACK of complex Narrative threads. The show really had a memory loss problem with previous events, with the wide and liberal use of the reset button, characters being abandoned after 7of9 appeared, and the borg in every 4th episode. Voyager also brought a ...ratings grab feel to Trek universe that didn't exist, and that was Seven of Nine. I find Jeri Ryan to be a fine actress. But hello silver jumpsuit. Did they really need it?

Perhaps we'll be on more even ground with you get to the Voyager DVDs. :)

I caught "Voyager" as re-runs because I didn't have ready access to a TV during my college years. However, I liked the fact that, since the crew was stuck by itself in the Delta Quadrant, the characters were developed during the course of the show's run as a cohesive whole. With "TNG" and "DS9", sometimes, some of the characters were not written to interact with each other well, so it got awkward watching some of the characters all of a sudden having to function as best buds.

Personally, I did not mind Jeri Ryan's acting in "Voyager", though I would have preferred that they made her wear a Starfleet uniform regularly (as she did in some "dream" sequences). This puts us on similar footing. :)

Hehe, yeah the silver jumpsuit was a desparate plea for ratings, I'll definately agree with you on that. Also you are correct in DS9 having the better narrative thread. Almost every episode was connected with another and was deeply involved with the Dominion War and/or Sisko's connection to the Prophets. Some hate DS9 for being so dark and far away from typical Star Trek, but really that's what made it so good. As for Voyager, I thought that was a fine show, but it did lack any longterm story arcs. And the Borg in every episode really started to get annoying. All that aside I still look forward to the DVD sets :D

Jeri Ryan's name is synonymous with bringing Voyager out of a funk that its writers got themselves into in the first place. Without her, Voyager would not have survived the entire run of 7 seasons. Making a deal with the devil in order to save your series is a necessary evil. However, it somehow opens up the show to criticism from Trekkies that the exterior is far more important than the stories.

Compared to DS9, Voyager is a tad weaker. DS9 has its moments but the storyline got too convoluted towards the end. Voyager actually got better with the appearance of the Borg but as you guys have mentioned, depending on the Borg to maintain interest gets old after the 4th time you used them in a month!

To bring this discussion into the present, Enterprise was faltering in the ratings for the past 2 seasons. Now, in Season 3 the writers tried to get things cooking by introducing the Expanse and the Xindi, much like a Delta quadrant in the making. The first few episodes didn't exactly get my juices going but, in the past 3 weeks, it's like a major transformation. All of a sudden, the gimmicks are gone and the stories take precedent again. For eg., last week's episode, the one that explores the ethics of cloning for body parts is perhaps one of the watershed episodes in Trek history. Go Enterprise :D

Star Trek: Enterprise is getting much better this year. But the stories seem to be ignoring some of the cast. I think Mayweather is a character still.. but with his one two lines in the past ...year.. you wouldn't know. :)
