Some people have nothing better to do than be jerks. These are malcontents who have found ways to be rejected by society (society usually doesn't reject people for no reason), so they lash out with acts that make them further ostracized from the world.

It ain't me, babe (Dylan). It's Random House who's the culprit.
tsk (pronounced as an alveolar click)
-interj.
1. (used, often in quick repetition, as an exclamation of contempt, disdain, impatience, etc.)
2. for shame!
–n.
3. an exclamation of “tsk.”
–v.i.
4. to utter the exclamation “tsk.”
Also, tsk tsk. --Random House Unabridged Dictionary
Oh, well. It takes the mind off our current problems.
Luc,
You mention you're in film school: Are you planning to combine your computer skills with your film knowledge eventually? Do you foresee a Pixar or a technical-effects-type position in your future? Sounds like a great pair of arts to possess.
Onijay,
You "can't imagine why someone would want to crash this site"? Why would someone take a key to the side of a new car? Why would someone graffiti a work of art? Why would someone ram an airplane into the side of a skyscraper? Why would someone bomb a defenseless city? Why are any senseless acts of violence committed? Like terrorists the world over, maybe these hackers see themselves as heroes, freeing the community from modernity or commercialism or corporate interests; or maybe they're just crazy *!$%!'s.

I've been developing websites since I was 14. Putting myself through film school through freelance website jobs. Obviously I could use a little work on my non-technical jargon. Tsk tsk...really? That doesn't make sense but I trust the professor knows the way. :)

It's not the server, it's the setup. Using Apache mod_rewrite should give a higher level of security for directory damage but obviously they got in anyway. If you set yourself up right the worst that should happen is an attack on the folders with CHMOD 777, full read-write-execute permissions. Usually that MOD should only appear on image upload folders which is why you should disallow the path to these files by grabbing the destination directory dynamically without actually displaying a real image path. Go Henning!

My 5 cents. :)
