It's been 110 years after the Lumiere Brothers (inspired by eddison's work) invented the "Cinematographe". A Combo camera-projection system that enabled filming in 35mm film at 16fps and allowed screenings for more than one person on a large screen. The first "Cinema", (another french originated word, from "cinematographe") a building intended for screenings, was established in Paris, France in 1895, a coultoural event that changed the way people percept the wolrd i dare to say. Offcourse back then special effects and dolby digital warent present..SFX appeared in france again, by the pioneer Filmaker George Melies. With his revolutionary work, "A TRIP TO THE MOON" 1902. Using trick photography and mirrors melies created an illusion so real for its time, it became a landmark in filmaking history. By then, movies stoped being documentaries, showing people working in a factory, or horses running in black and white, and aquired characters, and plots. Since then, films shifted from a simple thing to see, a complex process from which filmakers express philosophical aspects of society and its problems through lyricism on screen, a chance for the viewer to question some facts. It was then that filmaking became Art. The most direct way to get the meaning through, and show the world "your" illusional truth. A Form of art that was given birth by technology. and till today they walk hand in hand to the future. Today, due to the coultoural impact that some movies had in audiences, and the way in which movies are made, film in most cases Lost its power. The 90's, a decade in which the dominant movie system (Hollywood USA) transformed filmaking, into light, mindless, and some times stupid entertainment. Why is it hard to see something original in good ways? Like "eternal sunshine on the spotless mind", or another movie about societal isolation "TAXI"? Sure "mindless entertainment" is essential too,but i hate the fact that nicer things than Explosions, monsters, and other SFX are not done so often anymore.
