Last night I had the privilege to see Joel Schumacher's latest achievement and I must say that it is one of the most beautiful and well-adapted from stage to screen films I've ever seen! Emmy Rossum gave a spectacular performance as Christine, and Gerard Butler may have just topped Michael Crawford's portrayal of the Phantom.
The sets were lush and haunting, cinematography phenomenal! Minnie Driver was particularly hilarious as Carlotta, and responsible for the majority of the laughs. I urge everyone to go and see this musical triumph.

I have a question about the 1986 Broadway recording with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, if anyone happens to know. On this recording, there is a complete 2-disc set or a single disc highlights version. The music between the two that overlaps is the same except for "Music of the Night." I've heard both and although the complete 2-disc set is the better buy, I think I like the Highlights version of "Music of the Night" more. Why did they decide to differ only on this song? If anyone happens to know, that would be great.

By the way, I thought the movie was pretty good. The visuals and most of the acting was great, but the music, in comparison to the aforementioned recording, left a lot to be desired. Butler was an obviously inexperienced baritone that scooped up to notes, fell oiff at the end (unable to sustain) and sounded like he had digital assistance in hitting high notes. Michael Crawford of the Broadway version is a literally perfect Phantom, so the bar was very high. Emmy Rossum was a competent Christine, but she also suffered in comparison to Brightman. Minnie Driver's character, Carlotta was over dubbed by a different singer. Why was this not done for these other, more important parts? Anyway, the film was good but the lack of quality in the performances was distracting. The original source music is Webber's best (Cats is terrible and Evita is pretty good) and it deserved better singers. I'd give the film 7 out of 10 and the film's soundtrack a 3 out of 10. The 1986 Broadway recording, however gets my perfect 10 out of 10 and I absolutely encourage everyone interested in the sdtk to listen to the Crawford recording before making a purchase.
