Here are my early guesses based on things that I've read on the Internet:

Picture: Catch Me If You Can

Director: Steven Spielberg, Catch Me If You Can

Foreign Film: Huit Femmes (Eight Women)

Animated Feature: Spirited Away

Actor: Jack Nicholson, About Schmidt

Actress: Nicole Kidman, The Hours

Supporting Actor: Tom Hanks, Catch Me If You Can

Supporting Actress: Catherine Zeta Jones, Chicago

Original Screenplay: Charlie Kaufman, Adaptation

Adapted Screenplay: Jeff Nathanson, Catch Me If You Can

Cinematography: Conrad Hall, Road to Perdition

Editing: Michael Kahn, Minority Report

Score: John Williams, Catch Me If You Can

Song: Madonna, Die Another Day, Die Another Day

Costumes: Chicago

Art Direction/Set Decoration: Chicago

Makeup: Men in Black II

Sound: Minority Report

Sound Editing: Minority Report

Visual Effects: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Please, before you start flaming me, bear in mind that I'm making predictions of what will win, not what should or deserves to win. [:)]

Ehm i am telling you right now, if Road to Perdition does not win, or at least get nominated for best picture, then I am never watching the oscars again ;) (like anyone cares).

Best picture: Road to perdition (or Signs)
Best actor: Tom Hanks, Road to perdition
Best supporting actor: Paul Newman, Road to perdition
Best screenplay: Road to perdition
Best cinematography: Road to perdition
Best direction: Sam Mendes, Road to perdition (or M. Night Shaymalan for Signs)

Yeah, but, Per, you just like it because it has your name in the title.

Damn! I didn't think anyone would notice :P But I guess a teacher notices that sort of thing ;)

Seriously though, I do think Road to PERdition is (well along with Signs) my favorite movie of 2002.

I liked both ROAD and SIGNS (Road signs?), but I wouldn't rule out MINORITY REPORT or LOTR: THE TWO TOWERS. And I liked Eddie's predictions, too. The Oscars are always a coin toss, at best.

Ooops! Apologies for mistaking Spirited Away with Disney's Spirit: Stallion of the whatever.....[:)] lol

Oh another mistake. Forgot about Saving Private Ryan. This is what you get for replying and eating at the same time! LOL

I agree with the Judi Dench assessment. She just plays the same angry old woman in every movie. She does a great job playing an angry old woman, but there's little variety from one movie to the next.

Why didn't you like Spirited Away? You're not a Hayao Miyazaki or anime fan? It probably got the best reviews of the year of any kind of film, animated or not.

Monsters, Inc. WAS nominated for Best Animated Feature--and it lost to Shrek this past March. [:)]

By the way, another Oscar would be the 3rd for Spielberg, who won 2 for Schindler's List and 1 for Saving Private Ryan. He also received the Thalberg Award for general excellence in producing.

Catch Me If You Can is getting a lot of buzz and so is DiCaprio.
Spielberg could be in line for Oscar #2.

As for the Best Song category, is there another song that comes to mind other than the horrible Madonna one? [:)]

Spirited Away for Animated Feature? I'll take Ice Age any day! Does Monsters, Inc. qualify?

Hopefully we don't see another Dame Judi Dench nomination/win. Seems like all she needs to do to get nominated is to appear for 10 minutes in a movie (think Shakespear In Love).

Why would people think a movie made in 1989 would be up for best picture? Catch Me If You Can came out in 1989, produced by Stephen Sommers, which you can read on The Scorpion King DVD in cast and filmmakers. I have never even heard of this movie until it was being talked about on this forum. I mean, a movie that has never been advertise let alone an unheard of movie.

Um, where have YOU been, Nate? Catch Me If You Can is the name of the new Spielberg starring DiCaprio and Hanks. Sometimes, there are movies made with the same title, you know.

Per, Henning is the Editor-in-Chief of DVD Town. Only his opinion matters. He liked Minority Report, so it is a great movie. He liked Die Another Day, so my opinion no longer counts.

LOL. Just kidding. I mentioned Henning, Jesper, and Michael only because you claimed that no one you know liked it. But you know Henning, Jesper, and Michael, right? [:)]

Oddly, John and I both think that Minority Report is a very thoughtful, even philosophical, work. Personally, I think that there are more ideas in Minority Report than in every Dane's favorite movie, LOTR 1. [:)]

By the way, I finally figured out why John's eyes can access the Pre-Crime building--he has special clearance because he is/was the top cop at Pre-Crime (yes, I know that Lamar Burgess is/was the actual head of Pre-Crime, but Anderton is/was the muscle). Therefore, the building lets him go anywhere he pleases.

Ironically, Die Another Day may actually get a nomination for Best Song even though many people hated the music. This can be attributed to the fact that not many memorable original songs were written for 2002's movies, and Madonna is a safer choice for the Academy than Eminem.

Well, they DID nominate Blame Canada from the South Park movie, but the live performance of that song underwent 'special treatment'--basically, Robin Williams mumbled into his hands (which were covering his mouth) when he had to sing obscenities.

Eddie: Regarding: henning, jesper, and michael liked it.

Well Henning also liked Bond 20 wich you did not, so how can we count on his judgement ;)

Anyway, I found Minority Rep. to be too brainless and stupid to be Oscar material.

The Academy (just like the Grammy Awards) are all about safe choices, aren't they? [:(]

Speaking of songs in Bond movies, the only Bond song ever nominated for an Oscar was Paul McCartney's Live and Let Die.

There have been other great songs from Bond. My favorites include:
Carly Simon - Nobody Does it Better
Sheena Easton - For Your Eyes Only
Rita Coolidge - All Time High
Duran Duran - A View To A Kill
A-Ha - Living Daylights
Tina Turner - Goldeneye (written by Bono & The Edge from U2)

DIE ANOTHER DAY may get an Oscar nomination for Best Song? I could have gone a lifetime without hearing that news.

MINORITY REPORT brainless and stupid? Of course, maybe Per is joking. Still, the movie is foremost a sci-fi thriller, but I loved the ideas in it, too, and I don't think of that as odd. I think of ME as odd, true, but not the movie.

Well , I think that posters5 predictions are somehow very well “ ballanced” in accordance to the various nominations. At the Oscars, very often it is not the case .
It seems to me that ( though there is still time left for decision and still has few pictures still unseen) this is going to be one of “those” years when one picture is going to “sweap away” the awards. So, we are going to wait until April and see, but something is telling me that this is going to be “Road to Perdition”’s year, and another award for Tom Hanks.

And not to forget the theme songs from GOLDFINGER and FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE.

Actually, I've liked all the Bond songs except this latest. When this one started, my wife and I turned to each other with jaws dropped and then simultaneously whispered how awful it was.

Well, Alex, I happen to think that it is a year with many great films, so the Academy might split votes enough so that everyone gets a little something like the past 2 years. However, last year was simply a year of weak movies, and the year before had a strong showing from a movie that I think is very overrated--Traffic. Therefore, I am glad that this year, the competition seems to be among great--not just good--movies.

As for Best Song, I hope for John and Henning and all Scandanavia that LOTR 2 takes the big prize. Sound good? [:)]

The last one by Sheryl Crow was also awful. Yeah the Shirley Bassey tunes are pretty good.

Well, Per, Tolkien based many things in his writings on old Norse mythology--which explains why the reception in the Scandanavian countries has been so positive. Of course, there are always exceptions to any rule, so...

Well mayby I overstated it a bit. Minority Report is an OK movie, but I am just suprissed that people think it is THAT good and meaningfull. Also I did not realise that Henning & Co. liked it so much. Oh and btw. LOTR1 is far from my favorite movie [:)]

I liked it, but it is NOT on my top 5, or even top ten list. I know a lot of people who feel the same way, and actually my brothers wife left the theater during the halfway-break, because she thought it to be boring. Can you belive that ?

Actually I think just as many in the US liked the film just as much (I might be wrong here, but only 0.1 difference in votes of US and non-US on IMDB). Anyway a great film, but far from the best ever.
