I was reading through some reviews and this one's opening paragraph sums up my thoughts.
_______________________________________________________________
Phew…finally! A solid, top-to-bottom movie coming out of Hollywood that isn’t a remake, a rehash, a TV show, a sequel or a rapper’s first steps into the movie biz. THE INTERPRETER is an “old school” thriller that one-ups most suspense flicks by balancing the basic elements from such films, including a good mystery, suspicious characters, clues, red herrings, taut direction and action, with something that is rare in any sort of movie nowadays: character development.
_______________________________________________________________
I found the movie to be a satisfying and sophisticated experience.
I can proudly say Nicole Kidman had me mesmerized by her beauty throughout the entire film. I've never seen her look so good. Costume designer definitely gets an A+ in my books. I love a woman who dresses with sophistication and a sense of dignity. :D.

I saw "The Interpreter" this evening as well. Kidman and Penn were in top form! I wouldn't have thought to pair them as co-stars in any film, but they played off of eachother very well. I agree with Depression, this was a sophisticated film with a well thought out plot. It did feel a bit lengthy, but I didn't mind it much.
Ah yes... I too was completely awe struck with Nicole Kidmans beauty in this film. I thought that she looked amazing in "Moulin Rouge", but WOW, is she gorgeous in this film!

22.8 mill this weekend. Kind of surprising numbers. I didn't think the movie was advertised a whole lot, and it's not necessarily one of those movies with massive appeal.

That 22.8 mill put The Interpreter in 3rd best opening for a political thriller right behind Air Force One and The Sum of all Fears.

Jack Jack,
Read the posts above, and you'll get the answer to your post script. ;) You can't pit "The Interpreter" and "Hitchhiker's Guide" against eachother. Apples and Oranges my friend. I think you could accurately say that both are the best in their respective genres so far this year, but not one better than the other. ;)
lucboon,
I'm going to have to check out "Beauty Shop". Kevin Bacon is a great actor, and one of my favorites.

I saw this movie on Friday and it was awesome. It has been my favorite movie of 2005 so far. Maybe that will change when I see Hitcthhiker's Guide next week but maybe not. Anyway, this is a great movie and a must-see.
P.S. - Was anybody else's favorite part of the movie just watching Nicole Kidman. She was so hot in this movie. :x

Naw it was fairly well publicized. I specifically recall seeing the full length trailer preceeding Meet The Fockers and that was quite a while back. Normally I would be surprised that an intelligent film posted those kind of numbers in its first weekend, but look at its competition this week. Nothin'.
It is a very good movie, and I would say it's probably my second favorite release so far this year, the first clearly being Beauty Shop. Kevin Bacon was out of this world baby. Out...of...this...world...

I've liked Nicole Kidman for quite a while (since as long ago as "To Die For" and "Batman Forever"), though I have to say, she's really become an icon since her divorce from Tom Cruise.
For the record, though, I actually have nothing against Tom Cruise. In fact, I was saddened by the Cruise-Kidman divorce, and I'm one of those people who hope that they get back together.

Seamlessly intertwining 3 groups while building up tension is no easy feat. In the hands of a lesser director, that could of been a mess.
So Eddie, how long have you been admiring Nicole? A recent developement in wake of The Interpreter, or has this been going for a while 8)

luc,
Well, I had actually heard that "Beauty Shop" was a funny film. But, then, I've been accused of being slow on the uptake before. ;) So, I guess to answer your question... no, I didn't get it.
Depression,
I don't know about you, but in the "bus scene", when "everyone" was onboard, the only thought that came to my mind was "oh crap!". :)

I think the moment on the bus is one of those scenes that can really separate a competent director from a pretender.

Loved "The Interpreter." Sydney Pollack is back in form. The direction was smooth, integrating wonderful overhead shots, fades, dissolves, and a mounting tension that never stopped. Kidman was ravishing, even after a bomb attack; Penn was more restrained than I've probably ever seen him, adding to the film's low-key suspense.
Everything about the film, including the fact that it isn't particularly daring and most of it could easily be anticipated, worked perfectly. It's like "All the President's Men," where we know exactly what's going to happen, but in the hands of a good director and actors, it's riveting anyway.

I think the cat is out of the bag. Eddie is actually subscribed to People magazine and completely absorbs himself in the breakups and makeups of Hollywood.
Care to comment on Brad and Jen? ;)

Not saying I feel sorry for him, that's for damn sure. The guy gets any girl he wants. But still, you have to admit Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes, no comparison. Wow, we're like a Cosmo gossip column and there are NO WOMEN involved in this thread. Weird.

Yeah, I feel SOOO sorry for Tom Cruise. I'm sure it sucks to be him. I mean, the poor guy had to date, and then marry one of the hottest women on the planet (Nicole). Then, when they divorced, he hooked up with Penelope Cruz (the poor guy). And while "Katie" might be a step down from the likes of Nicole, she's not exactly ugly now, is she. ;) Don't get me wrong, Tom is a cool actor, and probably one of my favorite action actors. But I don't feel bad for him in the slightest. ;)

Maybe that's a sign that we should "put the keyboard down, and step slowly away"?

have to say i enjoyed this film right up to the end and then i felt massively let down. It could have been ended so much better - i was thoroughly engrossed throughout and thought wow this is really good only to be let down right at the end.
