I haven't read the books yet, but I just saw the movie, and I have to say it was hillarious! Though, if you don't like British humor at all, you may not get much out of this movie. I loved the humor. It's such a far cry from most movies released in the U.S., and was a refreshing change of pace. A friend of mine (whom is a diehard fan of the books) said he didn't like it because so much was left out from the books. Though, what can you expect from a storyline of many books, condenced to just under a 2 hour movie? I was laughing through the whole film! In my opinion, it's definitely worth the admission of a matinee.

The books are not really interrelated, and the first not that long, but concessions do have to be made. I'd recommend you read the first couple books, they're quite delicious.

I just hope they replaced "Vogon poetry" with clips of John Ashcroft singing. Talk about something to make your intestines leap out and choke you to death!

Actually, they did the Vogan poetry scene very well. It was incredibly funny. I'll definitely check out the first couple of books. Though, I've heard from a couple of people, there's no real point to reading the rest.
I'm not sure why this film is getting such low ratings. I loved it. Maybe the 'nay sayers' are fans of the books.

All four books in the trilogy are pretty funny. Long Dark Tea Time is a worthwhile read too. I definitely miss Mr. Adams.

I think the idea of four books in a trilogy is pretty funny.

Thought I would like this movie but it sucked in my opinion. Men In Black wins hands down.

I thought the movie was horrible. Not to take away from the enjoyment you received form it, but I found when it was finished it was like getting over pneumonia! :)

Onijay,
It wasn't meant to be insulting. It just sounded like you didn't get the joke.

Did you fans of the book know there are actually 5 books to this wonderful trilogy?? There's a big book out now, I think it's new, that has all 5 stories, plus a short story about Zaphod that takes place before he became president.
Can't wait to see the movie this week!!
p.s. I just saw the BBC mini-series on DVD. It was pretty funny! It's 6 30-minute episodes that spans the length of the first book, through the part where Ford and Arthur end up on a planet in the past in the second book. I believe it's from the 80's.

Ok Onijay, I'll spell it out for you... but just this once!
"4 books in a Trillogy". The operative part of the word "Trillogy" being "Tri" meaning 3, as in "tri-angle", "tri-cycle", "tri-ceratops" etc. "4" books in a "tri-logy", is funny. Though I think I may have just taken the funny right out of it. ;) :D

Personally, I enjoyed John's last comment.
Four books . . .
In a trilogy . . .?
Come on! Now that was funny! :D

Yeah, I loved it too.
Read the books (there's 5) if you can, too. They're even better!

Onijay,
Don't be so down on yourself dude! It's all cool. We're all friends here. No need to apologise whatsoever. Though, it's funny how much can be lost, or misinterpreted in text, eh? ;) 8)
Dave,
Thanks for the info. I've seen the first part of the BBC mini-series as well. Though, it had a HORRIBLE budget for any kind of special effects, it was still hillarious!

Oh no no no, I take no offense Josh, I know that you never intentionally get on the wrong side of anybody, I'm just trying to inform you that the joke had been around a long time before John mentioned it, not that I was trying to take away credit from John (actually it was csjlong who brought it up), just trying to allocate credit to the book, for coming up with the phrase (I thought I should do this after your high-praise of the joke, which it indeed does deserve the praise, simply to remind you of the actual origin of the joke). I probably did this in a somewhat confusing manner and for that I suppose I should apologize for providing a brief sense of darkness on these message boards once again.

"Hmm... It looks like I'm the only one whom enjoyed it." --Josh
No, you've got a couple of us with you who enjoyed it. It's very British, very much the combination of wry, deadpan humor and pure silliness, much of it in the Monty Python vein, with narration that sounded like it came directly from the books (but it's been, like, decades since I read the first book). Anyway, a lot of funny stuff in there, but I can see how some viewers would not want to put up with so meandering a plot. It's really a series of vaguely related gags and set pieces with little story or characterization. Still, funny enough.

John,
I thought it had a "Benny Hill" kind of feel to it. Maybe all British humor is too much alike. :D
