So, the summer season is winding down. What's your call? What is the best summer movie you've seen thus far, and what is the worst summer movie you've seen thus far?

Granted, I've only been able to see a few movies this summer, so I have a bare-bones list to pick from, but here are mine:

Summer's Best- Batman Begins
Summer's Worst- Revenge of the Sith

Don't take my worst pick as slamming Sith (though I truly didn't really like it), but with two little ones, the wife and I don't get many chances to catch a flick in the theater, so we're pretty choosy. I'm sure there are many worse summer movies than Sith, I just haven't had the pleasure to see them.

Well, it's one thing to do something on purpose for comedic reasons. With Martin, as you say, it seems more a lack of his ability, or that he wasn't trying hard enough to get the accent down to use it comedically. ;)

Well, of course, Clouseau is supposed to have a really bad French accent. Peter Sellers went out of his way in the later films to make his accent as funny bad as possible. Remember the "bimp" he got on his head? Or the organ grinder with the "minkey"? Or "the case is sol-ved"? But it's got to be funny bad, not plain, ordinary bad, which is I guess what you're saying about Martin.

John,

I don't know if you saw the trailers, and even though I love Steve Martin, his accent in the trailer was SORELY lacking! It waa bad, BAD French accent. That's what really killed it for me. I wouldn't be able to sit through the flick for that alone.

"'The Pink Panther' even though it stars Steve Martin, looks like it's a little too much on the 'kiddie' side to be a 'blockbuster'". --Josh

Interesting about the new "Pink Panther." Its release date was postponed because preview audiences didn't think it was very funny.

I dunno. The studios never ask me. When I heard they were making a new "Pink Panther" and that it would have Kevin Kline in it, I thought "Great!" I had remembered Kline's French accent and mustache in "French Kiss" and thought at the time he would make a perfect Inspector Clouseau. Then I learned he wasn't going to be Clouseau but Dreyfuss instead. Strike one. After that I found out Steve Martin was going to be Clouseau. With white hair? How dumb is that? This movie is supposed to take place before the first "Pink Panther." So why is Clouseau's hair pure white? Martin has colored his hair before for roles. Why not this time? Strike two. Finally, I heard that Shawn Levy would direct, the same guy who did "Cheaper By the Dozen" and "Just Married." Ugh. Strike three.

No wonder it wasn't funny. Maybe the post-production edits and reshoots will help.

Oooh, I don't know that any of the movies this year really deserve a "best" nomination. Yes, Star Wars ROTS was better than I expected, but, I'm with Sean on this, I didn't REALLY like it either.

"Batman Begins"... hmm. It was good. It was very unique. I liked it well enough to buy it, but does it deserve a "best of" title? The Jury is still out on that one.

"War Of The Worlds" I liked as well. But, even it wasn't extraordinary. Though, now that I think of it, in the context of the title of this thread, I think I'd have to nominate "War Of The Worlds" as best of the summer.

In my mind, even though I'm going to see "Dukes Of Hazzard" (I'm obligated, as I grew up with the show) there's obviously no way in the world this movie will take "best of". I don't think there's any doubt in anyone's mind that "Stealth" will be eye candy only. "The Pink Panther" even though it stars Steve Martin, looks like it's a little too much on the "kiddie" side to be a "blockbuster". Beynond that, any other movies will fall in the "Fall" catagory.

Best: Star Wars Episode III, I won't even bother listing anything else with it.
Worst: I havn't seen any bad films lately, just mediocre in my eyes. But seriously, there were no films I anticipated going to this summer. Hell last summer I was even looking forward to AVP I was so without great films to see.

This race isn't even a race. Best: Batman Begins
Worst: Fantastic Four

And I saw Fantasitc Four 4 free, and I was pissed off about it. Ever see a movie so bad, you're mad that you wasted time out of your life sitting through it? That's how bad it was. Right up there with Electra, Catwoman and Titanic.

Wow, that's like asking how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie-Pop. Let's ask Mr. Owl if anything coming up will be any good! . . . the world may never know. Let's face it, it's been a bleak Summer for really superb films. I realize the Summer is not over yet but I'm not banking on anything to save face.

Happy Hunting. ;)

Tim :)
