On Tuesday, 17 January 2006, the day after the Golden Globes, "Brokeback Mountain" was number 1 at the box office with $735,000. Second place was "Glory Road" with $693,000. The amazing thing is reach, with "Brokeback Mountain" in only ~680 theatres. Numbers 2 to 8 were all in at least 2,200 theatres, and Numbers 9 to 11 were all in at least 1,400 theatres. "Brokeback Mountain" averaged ~$1075 per theatre on Tuesday. Numbers 2 to 11 each averaged less than $315 per theatre on Tuesday.
Amazing. I don't think I've ever seen a limited release achieve this sort of thing.

did you notice how "brokeback mountain" is the only one in the top 10 that is not an animated feature?

ranjan,
box-office numbers indicate viewing trends. this is as important as analyzing movies themselves.

This is not for the first time a limited release has generated good revenue. I think - Million Dollar Baby was a limited release, My Big fat Greek Wedding is a classic example of 'word of mouth" revenue generation. I am sure there are many more. Golden globes and Oscars have always generated revenues for good movies (nominated ones of course).

ranjan,
"my big fat greek wedding" eventually went very wide. "brokeback mountain" is in between only a fourth and only a third of the theatres that movies like "glory road", "narnia 1", "king kong", and "dick & jane" are in, but it is still beating them to the top. as far as i can remember, "greek wedding" never had a number 1 weekend! we'll see how "brokeback" fares this weekend in its first weekend of wide release.
