2006 has been a decent year so far, which is rpetty encouraging since the bulk of the movie year remains well ahead of us.
A Best of 2006 so far:
The Death of Mr. Lazarsecu (a masterpiece)
Bubble
United 93
Mountain Patrol: Kekexili
Once in a Lifetime
The Proposition
Clean
Tristram Shandy (now we're getting into OK to good territory)
An Inconvenient Truth
The Road to Guantanamo
Iron Island
Wordplay
Not too bad. Last year, there were a few good action/horror films - none so far this year except Kekexili. Last year was a mediocre year for documentaries, and this year is looking even weaker so far. Bummer. Looks like 2004's 'Year of the Documentary" was a fluke, not an emerging trend.

i think the only movie i can actually remember seeing this year
was "v for vendetta".
and that was okay, at best.
but i still haven't seen "inconvenient truth" or "little miss sunshine",
so don't really know.

eddie, what is the scoop on jet li saying Fearless is his final martial arts picture? is he saying he can make any other kind of movie?
two others i most anticipate-
The Fountain - i hope this will be fantastic for Aronofsky
and
Children of Men - waiting for a great vehicle for my man Clive Owen! This could just be the one!

What? Oh, so you didn't appreciate both ENRON-THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM, and MARCH OF THE PENGUINS??
Both of these movies were outstanding, and "Penguins" was yet another excellent French-produced documentary along with the earlier WINGED MIGRATION [awesome also]. I think the French are scoring with quality documentaries, compared to their "serious" dramas (where the Spanish and Italian output has grown and improved in recent years).
-Love Hendrix!

"Enron" and "Grizzly Man" were both very good documentaries. I thought "March of the Penguins" was entertaining enough, but pales in comparison to the great "Winged Migration."
Aside from "Enron" and "Grizzly Man", however, there wasn't too much to get excited about in the documentary world in 2005. Other good docs from '05: New York Doll, Protocols of Zion. If you count "The White Diamond" and "Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession" as 2005 releases, you can add them too. But it wasn't nearly as deep as 2004 when I could have made a Top Ten of documentaries and still had worthy candidates to spare.

Eddie,
I was just thinking that I owe it to those folks to watch United 93 again today in remembrance of the heroism on display. Actors portrayed most of them, but it's the real people who are immortalized and their selflessness that truly comes through in that harrowing work.
In agreeance with Eddie...
