I agree that tommy should'nt be alive in "the last samurai".
And i specially agree with "The village". God that was pathetic.
I want you all to go way back, seventies, and remember "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" (M.Forman). The ending had a point, it had a purpose, yet it leaves the viewer...hanging. It's not "cathartic" at all, and most people don't get it.

What about the begining of a movie? I Just saw "The rope" (Hitchcock) again, and after going through the entire bonus material, i realized that the play never shoed the murder, yet hitchcock added the scene at the very begining. I Have to aggree with the screenplay writer on this one, he should never include that scene. With that one out, the whole movie gains much more anticipation points.

Oooh, almost forgot MI:3 and the most pathetic good guy-bad guy final fight/reunion scene and offcourse the frankestein scene in Episode:3.

S Coaster,

Audiences might not have wanted Foreman to change the ending to a classic novel.

Speaking of which, for the worst ending of all time, I'd nominate Demi Moore's "The Scarlet Letter," where Hester and the minister ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after. As she said in a promotional interview, she felt the story had to be updated for modern viewers. I'm sure if she had made "Romeo and Juliet," the two lovers would have run off to Rome together, opened a gift shop next to the coliseum, and lived happily ever after, too.

But John, (re: THE THIRD MAN) what about the (best) part BEFORE the final walk on the road - that great chase under the city streets (in the sewers etc), with an excellent mono soundtrack, and those "echo" sounds!

As for enjoying (or not) the ending of DEVIL'S ADVOCATE, it reminded me of the similar (type) of "dream" storyline, as seen in FIGHT CLUB [which I didn't care for really, although I did like D.A.]

By the way, regarding D.A., I'm fortunate to own the initial, [uncut] first DVD release, which (same as the uncut LaserDisc) featured scenes showing the original scultpured-artwork. As many may know, the artist sued Warner Brothers claiming they didn't properly "license" his artwork, and he "won" the lawsuit, which forced Warner to release another DVD which had the images of the artwork blurred [or partially edited-out, from what I remember reading]. I've never viewed the 2nd "blurred" DVD of DEVIL'S ADVOCATE.

LH,

When I said I liked the ending of "The Third Man," I didn't mean to imply any disrespect for the rest of the film. It is, in fact, one of my three favorite films of all time. Every scene in it is a classic.

And like you, I am lucky enough to have the first, unblurred DVD edition of "The Devil's Advocate."

"Castaway", now there's an ending that was just plain dull. I rather enjoy a film where I need to think for myself, but for some reason, I didn't like it on this film. I hated the whole cross-roads ending and would much rather have had a spoon fed ending, but that's just my opinion. I know plenty of people who liked the ending just the way it was. Neverthelss, "Castaway" is one of those films that's pointless to see more than once, and that ending just didn't work for me.
