As people get into HDTVs and high resolution display devices, it's important that they get the most out of their product with minimal effort.

The average consumer knows not about color calibration and how to do it correctly.

I think it's about time manufacturers come up with a standard, acceptable color profile, and calibrate ALL their TVs to that standard before it reaches the end user. That way, TV broadcasts and HDVD or DVD engineers have a yardstick to calibrate their products against. And the quality of the entire home entertainment industry will soar, without a doubt.

For high end products, I think it's even a good idea to include those little hardware colorimeter units that you can stick on the screen while it analyzes and profiles the screen to a set standard. TVs change their output as the devices age, so calibration is needed from time to time.

Is this all necessary? Yes. In the world of graphics design, already the most popular standards are sRGB, and Adobe Gamma 1998. Calibrating the workflow to a standard allows the artist to know exactly how other people with similarly calibrated devices will see the colors of the image. In the same way, I think it's important that as people are getting into higher resolution cutting edge displays, something as fundamental as a color standard will do wonders for the consistency of displays. Why should people buy $1000+ displays and suffer poor output and not be aware of it?
