Hi,
We've been experiencing a problem lately with our surround sound system at home. It was working fine for the past week when suddenly, while viewing a movie earlier today I noticed the main sound level going up and down a bit which I found odd, but I just dismissed it.
But tonight, we tried watching another movie and the sound worked perfectly for half of the movie but by the last half it kept fluctuating with a slight bit of static. All the speakers seemed to work perfectly all throughout with the exact same volume level except for our center speaker which was the one doinig all the fluctuating in the volume and the little bit of static. For the most part, the volume in the front speaker just went down to the point where you almost couldn't hear it and sounded a little muffled.
We don't have banana plugs or anything like that behind the speaker, it's just the wire which is stuck into a hole in the back of the speaker which we clamp down by tightening a knob.
We tried taking the wire out and putting it back in again and tightening the whole thing but again the audio kept fluctuating. The weird thing is that when we went back in the DVD the sound earlier seemed perfectly fine (where it was fine earlier) but it conked out at pretty much the exact same place. We then tried taking out the dvd and trying it upstairs and the audio worked perfectly fine.
So do you have any idea what the problem could be?
Is it something to do with the speaker or the speaker wire or dvd player? Also, even if this ends up being unrelated, is it possible for the wire connection at the back being the reason for static or fluctuation of volume in that speaker (we've had this problem before once but we thought fixed it when we realized there was still some plastic over the wire from when we got the speakers and it seemed to work perfectly for a year)?
And one last question, is it possible that the DVD player can somehow do this? I thought about it but it seems odd that if it's the dvd player that all the problems only happen with the center speaker...
I'd appreciate any help,
Thanks

It is most likely a problem with the amplifier/player or the speaker. I'm guessing the center channel signal from the amp/player is the one at fault, judging from your description of the problem.
Swap the problematic center speaker with the other known good channels. For example, connect the left speaker to the center channel just for testing. If the static problem remains, then the center channel signal may be borked on your amp/player. If the static and volume problems is gone, then your speaker is probably at fault.
If indeed the center channel signal is dodgy, check the connections on the amp/player side and the speaker side. Just to be sure, replace the wire and test again. If the problem remains even with the new wires and checked connections, your amp/player probably needs fixing. But do make sure all your A/V receiver or DVD player settings are okay before sending it for repair.
When troubleshooting these things, the methodical elimination of possible causes is most effective.
