gtropers,

Thank you for input. We are well aware of the new site's temporary glitches and are working hard to get things back to normal. Bear with us for a few more days, and we will catch things up for you.

I agree. While this site was undertaking it's long upgrading process, I found other sites with better information, which is available sooner, as well as having better quality ways to maintain your collection. I've also found that this is the only "DVD" site that pushes HD DVD and Blu-Ray like there's no tomorrow, despite the fact that the majority of DVD experts I've seen are calling the formats a bust (Blu-Ray especially), even with the improved picture quality. I used to read and post here all the time, but this will likely be my last. If you want an HD site, this is fine, otherwise, there are much better sites. (DVD Active, DVD Spot, DVD talk, etc.) So long, DVD Town.

Experts calling the formats a bust? Where are you getting your information? When I read comments like that, all I can imagine are people who want the formats to fail so they don't feel like their current hardware is inferior.

interplanetaryspy,

HD-DVD and Blu-ray are new technologies. People want to read about new technologies. And studios want to sell new technologies, so many of their releases are on HD. But because of limited screeners, studio PR departments cannot send out review copies of everything to every site. We are a big site, so the studios send us all of their HD material, and we review what we're sent. Of our last 100 reviews, 60 of them were regular SD DVD reviews. The other 40 were almost evenly divided between HD-DVD and Blu-ray reviews. That sounds fair to me. Also, just for the record, the HD reviews get two to three more hits than the SD reviews, so apparently a majority of readers are interested in the new technologies.

Exactly what "experts" are saying the two HD formats are a bust? This is a surprising piece of information to me. Also, perhaps you could explain to our readers what makes any person in the field of reviewing an "expert."

Are you kidding? That just proves my point - anyone who isn't foaming at the mouth for HD DVD or Blu-Ray has gone somewhere else. Off the top of my head, check out audiophile.com and slate.com for articles on the demise of both formats, or look almost anywhere for why Blu-Ray is a complete disaster. Sorry to break my "last post" promise. I hope it won't have to happen again.

To our readers,

In regard to interplanetaryspy's references to two "experts" foretelling the doom of both HD-DVD and Blu-ray, please be aware that the audiophile.com Web site to which he refers is a retail site selling mainly audio equipment. On the other hand, slate.com is a non-audio, non-video pop-culture site, which has a bit more credibility. However, in their only article forecasting doom and gloom, published in November, Sean Cooper suggests that both of the HD formats will die because nobody is going to buy movies on any kind of shiny discs anymore--SD, HD-DVD, or Blu-ray. He points to the Internet, cable-on-demand, the price of widescreen HD TV's, and the rise of the hard drive as determining factors. Obviously, we've heard all this before, and so far, none of it has come close to materializing.

Meanwhile, DVDTOWN continues to provide primarily coverage of standard-definition DVDs, plus HD-DVDs and Blu-ray discs. As a result of playing as fairly as we can with all three formats, our readership has increased dramatically in the past year. I think that speaks for itself.

To interplanetaryspy: We are sorry to see you go. Please don't hurt yourself on the way out.

By the way, I did a little research on these so called two "experts" and come to find out that they are two guys in Albuquerque named Buggs and Daffy. Go figure?
