A Merry Christmas to all,

I thought this would be a good place to say Merry Christmas and to share any Christmas stories we all have. So, in the spirit of the holidays, let me share my Christmas story of 1976.

As a kid growing up in the Portland, Oregon area, my family would spend Christmas Eve with my father’s family and Christmas day with my mom’s side of the family. Each year was always Christmas Eve at Grandma and Grandpa Raynors’ and on my mother’s side, the Bolen family we’d either be at my uncle Dicks’, Aunt Edda’s or my house. This story involves the year of 1976 at my parents house when I was 12-years old.

The Bolen family arrived in the morning—aunts, uncle, grandparents, cousins—, and rest assured my grandma and grandpa Bolen had already belted down a few bourbon’s before arriving. Needless to say, my grandma and grandpa Bolen were staunch alcoholics.

Early in the year, my father did some remodel work for my grandparents in their kitchen. Since he did the work for family, he gave them a great deal by charging very little. Nevertheless, the grandparents show up to my home on Christmas Day drunk off their butts and within an hour my grandma Bolen got into it with my father and accused him of ripping them off on the remodel work. The fight quickly accumulated amongst all the adults--lots of yelling, and shouting--and it resulted in my Uncle Dick and Aunt Willow grabbing their kids and leaving abruptly—I certainly couldn’t blame them.

Within an hour and a half, Christmas was over as everyone left in a fit of rage and my mother spent the entire day locked in her room crying. My father just remained quiet the entire day and the whole incident gave him bad, mixed feelings towards the Bolen family for many years. Christmas’s were never the same after--what my cousin Steve and I referred to as--“The Bolen Christmas Rage.” Needless to say, the Bolen family never got together for Christmas for many years after.

Since then and looking back, it was a terrible thing to happen but now my family just looks back at it and laughs. Because of the incident, I know this is why I cling to the Christmas movies “A Christmas Story” and “Christmas Vacation.” Those two films can show how imperfect things can become during the holidays and they tend to remind me of the Christmas of 1976.

So, everyone, please join in and share your Christmas story whether bad or good. Well, it is Christmas so it’s all good. =)

Merry Christmas everyone!

Tim =)

Funny story Tim, I enjoyed reading it.
At the moment I could not remember such an inetersting thing as your story,but I am sure that our fellow DVD Towners will share a moment worth of reading.

Merry Christmas everyone, though I as an Orthodox Christian will celebrate it 2 weeks later .
But that doens't mean that there is no reason to celebrate:o)
