Not really a DVD Defect, but didn't really know where else to put this:

This is probably a really dumb question, but I've always had it and never asked it. Some of the titles I have are 2.0, and of course many supplements are in 2.0 only. Why is it that some of the stuff coded in 2.0 plays through my receiver matrixed in Pro-Logic while others only come through in pure 2-channel stereo? The receiver itself makes this determination, everything is going through the digital line, I don't adjust anything, and still some are Pro-Logic while others are stereo.

Just a question I've always had but never asked.

Thank you, guru friends!

it has to do with the way 2 channels are encoded. DD 2.0 stereo is just front left and right. DD 2.0 surround means that the center channel as well as one surround channel have been phantomed or "matrixed" into the front left and right channels. this makes the center and surround feeds passive rather than active as with 5.1 mixes.

I'm having a "duh" moment!

I realize that I've seen that on the packaging regarding the 2 2.0 encodings, but never made that connection.

Eddie, thanks! I can't believe I never put that together before.

Sean,

No problem. I myself had difficulty with it until I did some research not too long ago.

The issue can get confusing since some movies have "4.0" mixes that encode the front left and right, center, and one rear speaker feeds as discrete channels.
