This is insane that they are already releasing a double dip of this title. Hopefully it will at least come with a coupon like the Windtalkers 3 disc did because this is some serious shafting of fans for money.

I used to get so pissed off about these double dips, but after a certain point, I can care less about these extra features. I mean how many times do you really watch that one extra interview? I stopped buying the more expensive version of these movies and just started buying the single disk with the movie. Master and Commander, Batman Begins, X3, all had 2 different disks released at the same time and I paid for the movie alone. If I want to watch the extra features I will netflix them. Of course if they released a new transfer of an older dvd release with a new picture and better sound then of course I would double dip. Since I went HD DVD, I have stopped buying DVD's. It pains me not to be able to buy Casino Royale today but I cant watch SD dvd's anymore and will not buy into the format anymore.

In fairness to standard-definition DVD, I just watched "My Fair Lady" tonight, upconverted on the Tosh A1. I'm sure WB will be bringing "Lady" out on HD before too long, but I really can't imagine it looking all that much better. The same goes for the newest release of "Mary Poppins," which my wife and watched again this last weekend, and any number of SD releases transferred at high bit rates.

I figured this would get double dipped since it's "companion" movie letters from Iwo Jima isn't even out on DVD yet.

I figured it would eventually, but not this close to the original release. There just isn't really any logic to dong it this way other than the obvious money grabbing, which i do realize is the only reason they do it. I just still hope it comes with a rebate offer of some sorts....

I posted a comment on the 2-disk edition that was just put online the other day but thought I might repeat it here. I wasn't at all surprised that the bare bones edition was put out and the SE is following, since Oscar season was approaching and no doubt the studio wanted audiences to be able to check it out since Letters From Iwo Jima was still circulating in theatres and Flags of Our Fathers may not have been on everyone's radar at the time it left the theatres. I am imagining that this new release will come close to Letters in terms of dvd release schedule, though I did almost expect the two SE's to be marketed as a box set since while one isn't required viewing in order to watch the other, they are companions to each other and I tend to look at both as a complete work since it seems to have been intended that way to a certain degree. Who knows, studios will do some crazy things lol.

"flags" and "letters" are handled by two different studios, both for theatrical and home-video distribution. in the past, warner and paramount have not been known to participate in dvd box sets. (warner collaborated with sony on box sets for kubrick and wolfgang peterson, but this sort of thing is rare in an industry that guards assets jealously.) there is little reason to expect a box set of the two movies, even if steven spielberg is involved.

"Flags" and "Letters" were co-productions of DreamWorks, Warner Bros., Amblin, Malpaso, and Truenorth Productions, distributed around the world by various companies including DreamWorks, Warner Bros., Fox-Warner, Paramount, Karo, Roadshow, and Sandrew Metronome. So, various studios are releasing various versions of the pictures, with WB doing the complete five-disc set, which they will release on May 22.
