If all you want are short clips for a little fun, go ahead and use the Sound Recorder that comes with Windows (assuming you use Windows - I guess Linux or the Mac OS have equivalents)

OK, Actually there are some dynamic tools to do that found on cheap consumer sound cards. Like the SB X-fi series.

What you can do is
1)Enable The Dolby Digital/DTS OnBoard Decoder.
2)Specify your favorite DVD Playback software to &quotS/PDIF OUT" audio (Thus sending the sound to the card to decode it)
3)Switch to Audio Creation Mode - Click settings and select &quotEnable bit-matched playback" and make sure your speakers setup is &quot5.1" (Well, i kind of assume you have a 5.1 speaker set)

Now, playback your favorite scene and rip it in glorious 5.1 through the recorder found on the "Audio creation mode" and save in multichannel Wave.
Here's another tip, play with those speaker controls a bit, and you will soon find out that by muting the center channel you eliminate all the main actor voices and you are left with a very crisp ambience or action sound in surround! Great for ripping those sticky trailer tunes or those soundtrack versions that are different on the movie than on the actually cd (Rainman's theme never sounded better -Ending credits)

Also good for isolating channels and record them so you can then edit them (in software like adobe Audition, or more professionally, in Cubase or ProTools) and then use them in your own little mix for a project you have!
