I recently purchased 3 DVD's through Ebay.

They will not play properly. Mouth movements not synched to voices, skipping and locking, and several menu items are not accessable.

The packaging, while very authentic looking, does not look like any other Disney DVD I have purchased from Major retailers. In addition the "Disney Video" logo sequence is unlike any I have see before, and I own 100's of Disney DVD's.

The front of the DVD package has a logo with a number 9 surrounded by words Dual Layer Quality.

Are these Pirate DVD's?

What should I do?

Thanks in advance for your help!

What movies are they? That would help get a better answer. If its something that Disney hasn't released on DVD, then they are pirated or just bootlegs of other regions discs.

DVD-9s are Writable DVD's with two layers of writable surface. Adding to 8.5gb of space to write your data on.
Almost all new dvd releases are using the disc format because it offers more space to put their extras on and keep the bitrate high.
Now, a Pirate DVD-9 means two things.

1) The pirate copied the movie directly from the original DVD Disc. That means that you have THE EXACT REPLICA of the movie. Same Picture/sound quality, menus, different subtitles / audio tracks and extras.

2) The pirate actually used a dvd-9 disc to write bootleg footage on it. Plus, he created his own Covers and Disc covers (nothing difficult for a guy that knows his way around Photoshop) and authored his own menu.

Now, the 1st “solution” is not profitable for ANY Pirate because empty Dual Layer discs are 5 dollars or more each. And pirates often sell their movies for about the same price. Not to mention the ink they throw on disc covers. So my guess is that the DVD-9 thing on the disc is pure Bulls*it.
Obviously, the first method is preferred for home use. I Made a backup of my original episode 1 disc because it started to skip chapters. Luckily my Dvd rom read it, and I made a 2nd disc. You can even skip the fbi warnings and all “user prohibited action” scenes.

To find out what the script is, stick it into your computer and check what size it says the dvd is. If its more than 4.3Gb you know you have a dual layer disc. However as previously stated its not really worth it to pirate dual layer discs yet, unless you paid a fair bit for them so exactly what kinda cash are we talking for these movies you got?

An easy way to tell is the ink colour. If you turn the dvd over and look at the readable side if its a kind of light purpley colour then you most likely have a copy, you know you definitely have a copy if you can see the line where it stopped burning as official dual layer dvd's are pressed together.

Funny that I found this website. This past week I wanted to finish my collection of Disney DVD's I only needed three more. I actually purchased four from Ebay and 3 of them were bootleg/pirated. I paid over 20.00 for each one (since they did say it was 100% authentic) There is so many ways to tell. On the Little Mermaid dvd it also had a number 9 the artwork on the front was perfect yet on the back, I guess the printer ran out of ink and was very grainy and off. Each one that I have here the dvd discs have almost-perfect labels. My thinking is, most people don't seem to care if it's bootleged or not as long as it works hence why ebay sellers feedback dosen't seem to get neg'd.

Just my story on the subject. I've contacted ebay as well as Walt Disney home video but I doubt anyone will put a stop to it. As of now I'm out a good 100 bucks after shipping and only one *true* authentic dvd. :(

You got bumped! The pirate DVD's on ebay usually sell for around £5ish. They are sold as "imports" which means basically chinese or japanese copies. You can buy them from those countries for around 50p each including the decent covers. If you know someone who lives there they ship them to you in bulk and you can punt them on ebay as "imports" which they are. The fact that seems to be missing from the description is that the imports are in fact copies also. If you really want to get back at them, and you have the time, do a search and jot down the ones that say imports or have screenshots that are obviously vhs quality. Once you have 20-30, or more if you wish, send an email to ebay and they will all be taken off. If you can find 20 against the 1 person they will be banned for piracy.

I never buy a disc where the seller uses a stock photo.
