I have a sony home dvd player which suddenly stopped working a few days ago. When I turn the player on I get fairly large blocks across the entire screen. A DVD will play, but the images are very distorted. These multi-colored blocks are quite annoying. This occurs with or without a DVD in the player. For example, the standard screen encountered upon powering up the DVD(the screen that says insert DVD) is also distorted? Any ideas? It occus when I use the standards yellow, white, red cables or if I use the the S-video cables. Any ideas?

How old is the machine and how often do you use it? If it is more than a few years old, and you use it regularly, it may simply have worn out. The fact that the machine exhibits the same malfunction whether there is a disc in it or not would indicate it is not a problem related to cleaning the machine or your discs.

After a couple of years, most electronic gear starts to break down, a sad but unfortunate truth. I would advise replacing the unit rather than trying to repair it. DVD players are very cheap these days. For instance, Sony's 775 plays not only DVDs but practically every kind of CD there is, including SACDs, and you can find it for under $100. Then there are other players considerably cheaper than that, as low $39.

The price of DVD players nowadays is frightning. The lowest one i have seen is £19 gbp which is scary! Get yourself a cheap sony as suggested, the ones i have had in the past have played everything. I wouldn't be surprised if i got a picture or some sound from certain brands of biscuit if i put them in into the dvd player the right way round ;oD

Seems to me, that it is very likely your player is not going to be of any use, anymore.
If so, Sony is a good choice ,but I would recommend you to visit the nearest store and see what they can offer from the Pioneer players.
I always suggest Pioneer because I have one at my home( ,Pioneer DV 454) and have been using it for more than a three years now, and so far do not had any problems with it.

Ooooo yeah pioneer are great. If you want to spend a few squids go for pioneer. Their technology in anything regarding DVD's has been nothing but top notch. I have never had anything but pioneer regarding DVD hardware in my computer.

I still bought a sony coz they are cheaper.
