I heard they were giving this player away so they could put a Blu-Ray player in the office....I don't know if that is true or not.

Since I won the contest, I replied to the e-mail I got about winning the trilogy.
I sent in my mailing address and phone number, but haven't heard back.
Just wanted to make sure you got one from me: Joshua Wingfield.
When can I expect to receive the set in the mail? A couple of weeks, or is it more?
Thanks again for hosting the contest!

I suppose i should, but I think it would just sit in the box if i won. PS3 is in the office. BDP-S300 is in the living room. Suppose I could put in the baby's room. I guess.

A Blu-ray player and an HD DVD player can reside nicely side-by-side. In fact, it's the ideal set-up.

If your television doesn't have two HDMI inputs, hook up one player to HDMI and one to component. Or use a switchbox. Ditto with the receiver. Use the digital coaxial input, the digital optical input, and/or the six-channel inputs.

John said < A Blu-ray player and an HD DVD player can reside nicely side-by-side. In fact, it's the ideal set-up." >

That's good advice John and I agree - unless one agrees with Tim Raynor's comments yesterday on another thread [Blood Diamond, I think], where he said HD DVD is "over," and it's not a question of "if" but when, etc, and that Sony has "won" the format war etc.

That Tim is sure shortsighted, seeing how it's only been a year of existence for each format [well, HD DVD debuted in April 06], and neither format is a major seller yet [unlike the standard DVD market].

Have you seen those reports about how very few PS3 owners have used their machines to watch a seperate Blu-ray movie? It figures, since these people are major gamers.

As you've stated before John, both formats are going to be around for several years, and there exists a real possibility that neither will ever surpass the standard DVD market - or if so it will take a long time (a decade or more some think).

I would think the stand alone sales are not exciting any of the studio at this point.

I doubt that long term any are willing to commit their business model solely on a gaming system (PS3 or MS Add On).

So while BR is enjoying about a 1.5-2-1 sales lead in the last couple months its nothing all that impressive considering the hardware advantage they have. Currently on the stand alone front HD DVD has recently been selling 3 or 4 to every BR players on top of already leading. Things like this if not turned around will keep studio's interested in HD DVD.

I think the BR stand alone player strategy is to kill HD DVD so they start buying ours. I think the HD DVD strategy is make them affordable and get the prices down to a level were it is affordable for the average consumer as an add-on to an HDTV purchase.

HD DVD might end up with a significant market share of movies sold, but has little chance of being an outright winner since the simple existence of the PS3 ensures that the format will not die completely for the duration.

For Blu-Ray to win it needs to Kill HD DVD quickly before these stand Alon's really start to impact the numbers and make duel format a reality. This is why they are claiming victory every month. Not sure why they need to continue claiming victory if they have actually won, but I guess they are just trying to make sure everyone heard the first 3 or 4 times... Like "Hello, Remember we WON? Well we are still winning. We WIN> Hello? Bueller?

Most likely Q34/Q4 battle will be a wave of releases from the BR folks versus continued price reductions on the HD DVD front and hopefully some nice releases. Basically just an escalation of the current activities. Not sure what happens if the BR folks call sell a ton of movies Ɣ/5 times more than HD DVD), but the HD DVD folks manage to sell 4 or 5 times the Stand alone players. That results in some funky mid-long term sales projections needing to be taken into account to figure out who is actually in better shape.

This is possibly why we are not seeing so many movies released at the moment. They are looking to release a TON in Q3/Q4 in order to claim Victory once again. If they can get sales back to 4-5 times HD DVD. This will also enable them to claim momentum as well. Sure it will all be inflated and sales will drop back down to more even levels in the months to follow (all things being equal), but I am pretty sure that is their strategy. Continue claiming victory until it sticks with Joe consumer. They will manipulate the numbers through releases and maybe some timely hardware discounts and if they go hard enough they just might succeed this time.

Cheers,

Richard

if the report about gamers not using their ps3 to watch blu-ray discs is true, then the attach rate for blu-ray adopters is really not as bad as the hd-dvd camp likes to shout all the time.

just food for thought...

Hey, Henning,
My friend (who I'm giving the Matrix set that I won) has his birthday this Saturday.
Can you let me know if you've already sent it? You said It would be here shortly...
but I haven't gotten it yet. I just need to know because otherwise I'm going
to need to buy something else.
Sorry...I'm not trying to be pushy...just thought this could work out nicely for my friend.
