I bought a Toshiba HD-D2 High Def DVD player from Costco. I have loaded it with the latest firmware. This is basically the same player as the A2.

I have ONLY an HDMI cable with the output set to UPTO 1080i. I keep getting a message ~~"Output was limited to 480p".

Has anyone seen this? What does it mean? Is it being upconverted?

How old is your TV? It may not be HDCP compatible, which means that the player cannot do the proper handshake via HDMI. If this happens, the player will only upconvert to 480p.

kilgore's probably right about the HDCP handshake...in which case, it's not just an upconversion problem. you might not even be getting 1080i from your hd-dvds!

Thank you for writing.

I just bought my TV. Its a Vizio 47inch (VIZIO GV47LFHDTV) 1080P. It is definitely supporting 1080i (I have DTV HD and when playing HD DVDs, there is no problem).

It must be something within the player, specific to SD DVDs.

that's very odd. the only time that my hd-dvd player limits upscaling of sd-dvds is when i use the component connections.

I'd call Toshiba's HD DVD technical-support line: 1 800 319 6684. They should have an answer for you.
