I know this is not a tech message board, but i stumbled upon something that makes anderton's little video editing tool in minority report look like yesterday's toy.
It's called "surface" and it comes (unfortunately) from Microsoft.
From the few clips i've seen on the web page (check link below if interested) they pitch it not only as a home entertaining tool but a tool that can be integrated into everything in our life. Shops, train stations, professional workstations, restaurants, etc etc.
It's this little table with a screen for a top, which is completely "touch" enabled. imagine the iPhone screen on steroids. Inside the table there's a pc running (obviously) that seems to be running on some new version of windows similar to that of media center.
You can paint, squeeze or enlarge pictures with your hands, find routes easilly, sync your phone with (really cool thing, u just place the phone on top and it will give you access to all it's content), and send e-mail.
They also have those clips with the thing in a fancy restaurant and when the drinks arrive on the table some little themed animation starts playing under the glass, and then they pay their bill separately just by dividing the cost by choosing what they had...and by placing the visa on the table (kid of far fetched really).
There's a little "history" section in the web page which tracks back the development of this device since 2001. They show some of their first designs but the finished one, the one that will hit the market, i have to admit, looks very Apple-ish.
I mean, it's a good idea, can really catch on, but on the other hand, it's microsoft!
