I fail to see a reason to consider anyone other than Shatner for the role.

In "The Deadly Years" he played old.

Now he can just play young.

He's Shatner. He can do anything.

Looks like that Chris Pine guy has been confirmed to play Kirk. Also, they have cast Karl Urban (from Bourne Supremacy and Lord of the Rings fame) as Leonard "Bones" McCoy. That just leaves the casting for Captain Pike (Kirk's predecessor as capt of the Enterprise) and Tom Cruise has been rumored to be in negotiations for the role.

At last, a "Trek" film that I won't even be remotely tempted to see.

Such a pessimist.

Nobody plays Kirk other than Shatner.

Nobody ever plays ANY role that Shatner ever played.

It's just wrong.

Wow, we must really be scraping the bottom of the creative barrel. I thought "Dukes Of Hazzard" and the Lindsay Lohan version of "Herby" were bad, now we've got remakes of the original "Star Trek" and "Night Rider" coming out? This is just sad. Anything to make a buck, I guess.
