Hey guys I read your review for Transformers and video is only an 8? Wow that truely disapoints me. I was hoping for at least a 9 after seeing the trailer last week in HD while watching the NFL on CBS. I am glad audio got a 10, but I was hoping video would have also been that high. Well I will have 2 see 4 myself.

I, too, was hoping for a 10. But I took off a point for the video's slight glassiness and another for the minor moire effects (shimmering lines) I noticed. My guess is that many other reviewers will not think these small distractions worthy of even mentioning, so if you prefer to think of my giving the movie a 10/10 for video quality, go ahead. Still, I think an 8/10 is damned good.

FYI - High Def Digest also now has a TRANSFORMERS HD-DVD review up on their website.

the same problems persist in the hd dvd as in the sd dvd--namely, the CGI resolution is much lower than the live-action stuff, so the robots look blurry and even muddy.

top shot: real cars on a highway

bottom shot: fake robot on the same highway.

plus, a lot of night-time scenes have noticeable grain/noise in the background. i'd give it a 7/10. as usual, my good friend john is too nice.

Thanks Eddie...

Although I did say recently I'd buy the HD DVD of TRANSFORMERS, now I'm just going to recent it instead (first), until a furthur discount sale later (probably). Too many people have said it's not as "re-watchable" as you might be led to believe (from the main fans). Since I haven't even seen the movie yet (nor theatrically), I feel it's best to do an HD-DVD rental from either of my Netflix or Blockbuster online rental accounts, before perhaps a later discount sale purchase.

Hmm... top shot is with cars on highway without any significant movement (coming toward you) and the bottom shot is with robot running past you on highway and there's a difference

I guess the shutter speed on the camera wasn't fast enough for those real robots running down the highway perpendicular to your point of view. Perhaps it's a depth of field problem because of lower light compared to the cars and they really had to open it up to get the robots exposed right compared to the cars in bright sunlight and they lost the focus a tiny bit?

I'm sorry, but with a "little" knowledge of photography and simulated realism with CGI, I can't help make fun of that post.

Eddie,

Regarding your " Sharp 30-inch LCD TV (1280x768 resolution)", what do you use for the hi-def input - component or DVI/HDMI? I'm just curious as I haven't seen a Sharp 30-inch (USA) model since their 2004 line (holdover from '03), as 2004 was the year of their first 32" model, the GA5U series, followed in '05 by the DA5U series (the same which I have).

I'm sure the Sharp provides a nice picture [althouth the contrast ratio is not as good as their current models], but I was curious of what specs your LCD had, and how you view HD content. Thanks in advance.

Everyone... As a followup, just a note that I'm going to buy a discounted 50" 720p plasma this holiday season, as I want an improved CR, smoother picture on fast-moving images, rich colors, and a large screen upgrade at a lower price point [discounted plasmas]. While my own Sharp Aquos of 2 years is very good, I would upgrade to the better overall image quality of plasma, rather than an LCD.

Love Hendrix,

Have you considered front projection? Obviously it depends on your room size and ambient light control, but 120" at 1080p at less cost is better than 50" at 720p IMO. Plus with FP I find it a more "theater like" atmosphere. Just another option...

**so the robots look blurry and even muddy.**

So CGI looks even worse in HD?
