Just one minor nitpick Falcon, I have a 46' TV and I notice a difference between 1080i and 1080p. I'm glad I spent the extra $100 and got the HD-A20.

Anyhoo, I think both formats are pretty strong now so they can both last, or HD DVD will triumph in the end. It's all about money, and blu-ray is just way too pricey. The picture quality is exactly the same, or slightly better in HD DVD's favor (based on all the complaints I've seen).

Sure, Sony has Spider-Man 3 on their side, but really is that such a big deal? My HD DVD player can upconvert regular DVDs up to 1080i anyway. And like Falcon mentioned, there's not much difference.

So basically, people are just paying through the nose for the Blu-ray name and that's it. I don't have a Blu-ray TV, I have an HD TV. Personally, I think the Blu-ray name is to kiddie so I am baffled to why it even lasted this long.

Why is it that people are ok with having PS3s, XBOX 360s, Wiis, PSPs, DSs, but not 4 media formats? (DVDs, Blu-rays (which I support), HD DVDs, and downloads?

If we start arguing about Blu-ray vs. HD DVD, we can also start with PS3 vs. XBOX 360 vs. Wii...

And remember, the war is giving time for the downloads to lift off, I didn't wanted to see it that way, but when Paramount takes one side and most of the other studios don't, what would you think? Oh yeah, and Microsoft too...

And help me out, HONESTLY: is there a real B-I-G difference between upconverted DVDs and high-def DVDs??

Can someone tell me why is it that people with blue rays get mad beacuse paramount and dreamworks took sides. Did Fox and Disney take sides too? Just asking.

MVCKADEL, as to your XBOX 360 vs PS3 argument it looks like people are choosing the 360.

September proved strong for the Nintendo Wii and the XBOX 360, leaving the Playstation 3 gaming console in the dust.

The numbers for September:
XBOX 360, 527,800
Nintendo Wii, 501,000
Nintendo DS, 495,800
PlayStation Portable, 284,500
PlayStation 2, 215,000
PlayStation 3, 119,400
Game Boy Advance, 75,000

Sales are 5 to 1 in favor of the XBOX 360 over the PS3. Sony is losing quite a few battles at the same time and they are losing a FORTUNE trying to make it work.

well 360 out sold everyone in september, but remember halo 3 lauched, before halo 3 lauched it was maybe 2 to 1 in favor of of xbox360 over ps3,it never came close to nintendo wii numbers! xbox 360 had a full year head start on both ps3 and the nintendo wii, but as of less than a month ago the wii just passed xbox360 for next generation console sales leader! it toke nintendo less than a year to sell 13 million units, it toke almost a year and a half for the 360 to hit 10 million units. the ps3 is failing big time and is yet again cutting its price! This also could be a blow to hd dvd since the ps3 is both a nextgen video game system plus a bluray player. but the trend is that people usually arent using there game systems for movie players so if that trend continues and the hd dvd players are at the rigt price hd dvd is in for a huge holiday season.

Wait a second, aren't there about three to four times more Blu-ray discs out on the market than HD DVD discs? Sure, let's release a whole bunch of older movies on Blu (like Robocop for example) and then now we can say we are selling 2:1 when the reality is, our sales are slowly dying.

first off, I dont Hate Sony. They seem a little sneaky, but Im pretty sure all big companies are. Anyway, I went with HD-DVD. I got an HD-A2 for $250, and am happy with it. I chose it because of the price and price alone. Since then, I have have been more aware of the format war, and off course, I am pulling for HD-DVD. But a few things piss me off about it all. First off, I cant go through any regular programming w/o seeing a commercial for Blu-Ray. My girlfriend is like, "Is that what we have", and Im like, uhh no. So I guess Sony has the lock down on the advertising. Not to mention, Most of the commercials I see that are DVD/HD-DVD specific, i.e. Transformers, only mention it is available on DVD...WTF??? Sony will always let you know that it is available in Blu-Ray as well. SO for this, I blame HD-DVD's ad stategy...maybe they do not have as much money, but common, do you want to win this thing or not. Not to mention all the Best Buy ads and such, the week Transformers came out on hd dvd, you had to look for it in the ad, but when a lame Blu-Ray movie comes out, its all over the ad...I guess my point is that Blu Ray is winning probably mainly because of publicity and the name alone. I wish the general public would wise up.

Falcon,
One thing to keep in mind when looking at 1080i vs 1080p. Most people will never see any difference between the two IF their tv is a quality set with a very good de-interlacing circuit. All players, HD-DVD and Blu-ray, for some strange reason, take the 1080p information and interlace it to 1080i , if the output selected is 1080p than the player de-interlaces it back to 1080p and sends it out to the tv. It is important to realize that if the tv does a better job deinterlacing the signal than the HD-DVD or Blu-ray player than you can actually see a better picture buy switching the output of the player to 1080i . The only way to tell is to test it on your tv and see what looks better. This is why the Toshiba HD-A2 which outputs up to 1080i is such a great deal for most people . The picture is fantastic and the price is right. I'm shocked that everyone hasn't purchased this player!

I own both HD-DVD and Blu-ray and I prefer HD-DVD hands down. The players work better and I have far fewer issues while playing movies. I own almost 100 HD-DVD's and about 60 Blu-Ray's. My normal DVD collection exceeds 1500 movies. For those that think HD is only a little better than standard DVD's haven't seen HD on a quality HDTV. HD movies are much better in detail, shadow detail, color and much more 3 dimensional than standard DVD's. I notice a difference on my tv's that are 32" and bigger. That being said, the smaller the set the closer you need to sit to see the difference!
