Haven't seen The Shining in years.

If I had to choose movies that have given me the real creeps: Rosemary's Baby and Repulsion.

Picked this up along with Clockwork Orange yesterday at Best Buy. Got them as part of the 2 free HD DVDs for buying another Xbox 360 HD DVD add on. Started watching yesterday and finished it off today. Best version evah. There's a pretty good review over at [http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/].
I'm a fan of Stephen King books and I've owned The Shining on VHS and DVD, but this is the best version yet. Quite a few extras also which I'm about to check out even though extras usually don't interest me. Two thumbs up.

Kubrick butchered the book in my opinion. Even King was not pleased with where Kubrick took it. Aside from enjoying Jack's acting, I thought the movie was one of Kubrick's worst. It was too slow, it dragged, it was boring as hell and there was really nothing frightening about it. I've taken afternoon naps that were more exciting than The Shining. It was a pretty over-rated piece of crap if you ask me.

Fortunately, Tim, I didn't ask you.

Best horror film ever made. And nothing else is close.

I think the fact that King did not approve of it only argues in the film's favor, considering the dreck he is usually associated with. Fine writer miserable taste in movies.

kubrick is like most directors--early stuff great, later stuff zzzzz...

i mean, you put "paths of glory" up against "full metal jacket", and "FMJ" looks like a student movie!!! plus, "spartacus" has more to say about sex than "eyes wide shut".

Oh boy, here come all the art house critics to spank me on The Shining.

I realize I'm in the minority on this one, so dish it out, I can take it.

WB have yet to send out review copies of any of their Kubrick HD DVDs except "Eyes Wide Shut." However, I should receive "The Shining" before long. I've got to go with Chris on this one. I've always enjoyed the quiet horror of the situation. It's not a particularly scary movie for its shocks or things that jump out at you and go "Boo," but a film of building tension, isolation, despair, and eventual hopelessness. Now, if you want to see something really boring, try to watch King's own television adaptation of the book.
