So when I use an optical connection from my HD-A3 to my receiver It downgrades the True HD audio into DD? Should I use something besides an optical connection?

it depends on your receiver. If you have a receiver with a HDMI input capable of accepting audio use that. If you don't well Optical is the best you can do. The A3 won't downgrade True HD into DD it converts it to DTS.

When I finally got a receiver with HDMI it was a world of difference from the optical cable I was using. Getting the uncompressed PCM stream vs the DTS stream made me realize what I had been missing. It is at first strange because of how quiet the track is compared to the DTS track but the clarity is remarkable. It was amazing how you could here everything crystal clear and still be able to talk and not have to scream over the movie audio. My reciever cannot decode the tracks so I just set the player like has been stated in the previous posts and it is the way to go. I think it compares nicely to the Uncompressed tracks on Blu-Ray disks.
