Just saw it. LOVED IT. Wow what a movie. Ridley Scott did a fantastic job with this movie. Denzel was EXCELLENT, I would be surprised if he didn't get an oscar nomination for this movie. Russell Crowe was very good also. Great all around cast who played their parts very well. I haven't seen a movie this good in a few years.

I can't wait to read what you guys thought of it.

Ridley Scott's "American Gangster" may not be a great gangster film--it doesn't equal Francis Coppola's "Godfather I or II" or Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas"--but it comes pretty close to good gangster films such as Michael Mann's "Heat" and Scorsese's "The Departed."

Of course, like so many recent films, it's too long. Scott could have trimmed another thirty minutes and not lost any plot or character developments. That said, I was surprised at how fast it went by. When I looked at my watch at the finish, two-and-a-half hours had gone in a flash. It's always a good sign when a long film feels shorter. It's a darn-sight better than those films where even thirty minutes are agonizing.

Like "The Departed," the new movie is based on a true story set in the late 1960s to mid '70s about a Harlem drug kingpin, played by Denzel Washington, and an honest drug cop, played by Russell Crowe. Their stories play out almost entirely separately up until the very end, the film alternating back and forth between them, both stories unfolding against a backdrop of big-city police corruption.

The acting from the two principal stars is not unexpectedly excellent, although when it was all said and done, I have to admit I was more drawn to the gangster's story. Maybe that's because the villain of a piece is often more interesting than the hero, who in this case, real or not, is a little too good to believe.

John
