Thanks for the tip but it doesn't help me since I don't really want or need another gaming system, and I only have a $300 budget. I really don't want to spend more than $250 but $300 is my max.

Then get yourself a Wii, it's novel and good exercise at least!

bbgirl, I don't need or want another gaming console. Helloooo...

I'm actually leaning to an HDDVD player 'cause it's in my budget and it'll be a sensible intro to hi-def DVD viewing.

Ha - ok, well to be honest I wouldn't waste your money on a HD DVD player. It's being outsold 2:1 right now. You can see the stats at the link I provided.

As it looks right now, if you get a HD DVD player it will be useless by end of 2008 as Blu-ray is currently winning the format war.

Stick with DVD for now if you can't afford a Blu-ray player and be a little patient.

I guess I'll wait, but if there's a deal any time soon that I can't pass up I may just bite the bullet. I can't blindly buy into what everybody else is buying just because it's popular or I would have read all those Harry Potter books. You pointed out all these features on the PS3: "...1.3-compliant which means it supports DeepColor as well as native pass-through of next generation audio formats - Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD Master Audio - to a compatible receiver or processor..."

Those are all advances I can't use right now anyway with my current TV and sound system, and I sure can't upgrade those now.

More of that strange "shhhiiiillllling" noise I keep hearing.

No, it, meaning the Toshiba HD DVD players were outsold by the PS3s in the first two months of the PS3's introduction, when the PS3 sold about 1.5 million units in America. The numbers now stand at about 1.7 million Blu-ray capable players in U.S. homes and about 600,000 HD DVD-capable players in U.S. homes, with HD DVD stand-alone players outselling stand-alone Blu-ray players handily. However, the number of high-def discs available for each player is about the same, and the number of discs currently sold is becoming ever more even (today DVD Empire lists more Blu-rays sold, 55% to 45%, an unusually close set of percentages given the current Blu-ray player advantage of over one million units).

John, for 2007 Blu-ray has a 2:1 lead on HD DVD, based on the stats site you provided:

http://www.dvdempire.com/Content/Features/hidef_wars.asp?userid=99366040796575

For the week of Nov. 06th, it currently says HD DVD 44.29% to Blu-ray 55.72% ... in an earlier response of yours it was at HD DVD 52% to Blu-ray 48% ... this means that the figures have now switched from being HD DVD with an advantage during that week period to Blu-ray claiming the advantage once again in that same week period just a day or so later.

John, while there might be similar number of titles for each player available, there have been far more Blu-ray media actually sold ... about 2:1. In addition, the more Blu-ray titles are in the top 10, and top 100 rankings of Amazon. So either better movies are on Blu-ray, or more people are buying Blu-ray ... either way it's good news for Blu-ray.

Blu-ray has currently outsold HD DVD in every week of 2007, it will be interesting to see how this continues in the holiday season.

It would also be helpful John if you could provide links showing where you figure the sales for players for Blu-ray vs HD DVD.

i'm not the one here who tells people they should switch whenever they say they are making a purchase of their own decision, you are trolling, the rest of us like having discussions.
