I am a tech stock consultant for a private firm which I own. I am also in the process of buying a Video gaming store. I make money either way but just try to put out the perspective that figures can be manipulated.

Oh yes a tech nerd

Hey, did everyone learn from "bubblbathgirl's" comment a few pages ago, the one that said this -

Quote:
"As it looks right now, if you get a HD DVD player it will be useless by end of 2008 as Blu-ray is currently winning the format war."

So, all the HD-DVD players will be "useless" on January 1, 2009? Gee, I tend to believe my HD-DVD player [and PS3 too for that matter] will still play great after 12/31/08, don't you bbgirl? It should be NO problem playing HD-DVDs, DVDs, and CDs, just because the date is 2009.

By the way, bbgirl, I own three Pioneer LaserDisc players (2 w/DD 5.1 output/and all have DTS too), and none stopped working when the LaserDisc format folded in 2000 (USA) and 2001 (Japan). I also have a working Sony SuperBetaHi-FI VCR still in use, even though that format was discontinued a long time ago.

So, whether the probability exists [and I think not] that one of the hi-def disc formats ends 2008 with one side suddenly receiving a declaration of no more software support (movies, concerts, TV shows, etc), well, don't worry, as we move into 2009 the hardware and HD DVD software will "keep on truckin", and continue to provide enjoyment and playback of all the discs it's capable of playing [HD-DVDs/DVDs/CDs].

Learning curve... Formats don't become "useless" just because the date has changed... well, unless you bought one of those early Divx DVD players (from Circuit City) that bit the dust on a specific day in the summer of 2001 (no longer possible to "authorize" playback of the PPV Divx discs), because it was no longer supported [by phone] - well, at least they continued to play standard DVDs!

Admittedly I may have missed it because this thread is as long as a Russian novel, but I find it amusing that despite all the arguing over numbers, no one has bothered to question the number that Henning offered: 90,000. Or rather, no one has bothered to ask where that number came from. Maybe it's only because I teach journalism, but a fact without a source cited (or at least identified as self-promotional vs. independent) has to be taken not just with a grain of salt, but THE WHOLE SHAKER.

If PS3s owners are buying .47 movies... That's just under 1 movie per 2 owners... How in the world has the PS3 become a defacto BR console???? It would certainly seem that PS3 owners have purchased the PS3 to play games...

I'm done fighting... I've bought my friends HD-DVD players. We are all happy with our HD-DVD players... and the movies look great on my 50" Sony SXRD. I've looked at the facts, what is more consumer friendly and my money is on HD-DVD. It's not a fan war.

If I'm wrong, my players will be on eBay in 2 years. Until then - I GOT SO MUCH EXTRA MONEY FOR MOVIES NOW THAT I SAVED ALL THAT MONEY... I'm just sad Disney won't get any of it.

John: and the number of discs currently sold is becoming ever more even (today DVD Empire lists more Blu-rays sold, 55% to 45%, an unusually close set of percentages given the current Blu-ray player advantage of over one million units).

John, I would imagine that not everyone who bought the PS3 had a hi-def TV at the time. That would explain those numbers.

Love Hendrix!, I hope you're just being sarcastic ... but if you actually didn't understand what I meant ... let me clarify ... if the trends of the present carry over into the future Blu-ray will be the sole HD format by years end 2008 (analysts have already predicted this). Sure your HD DVD player might still work but it WILL be useless as studios will stop making media for it.

Shawnwc, that's the whole point ... the most important studios are siding with Blu-ray ... ie, Disney ... you shouldn't be "sad" you have any product. If owning HD DVD makes you feel sad then that is truly sad ... and you think HD DVD is more consumer friendly? LOL ... have you ever actually tried saying "HD DVD" quickly a few times in a row. HA!

But seriously, there are currently more of the LARGE studios ... the more significant ones, backing Blu-ray. Blu-ray has MORE titles out, AND has outsold HD DVD in 2007 2:1.

In case you don't believe me, you can see the engadgetHD article from Oct 24, 07 here: http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/10/24/blu-ray-nearly-maintains-2-to-1-sales-lead-over-hd-dvd/

Those facts along shown that Blu-ray is winning. It shows that the masses have already spoken, and this year they've chosen Blu-ray.

Let me make a couple predictions...

HD-DVD sounds funny if said multiple times??? HD-DVD, sounds like DVD and HD. So it's already giving a hint to what it is. Bluray.. What's that? Is that the "other" movie format, what Disney now calls it's movies or the disc type that the PS3s use?

I'm sad Disney bought into all the hype. They'll come around. You'll see... and sooner than you'd expect.

I bet the post-Christmas numbers are going to slaughter any and all numbers you currently have for BR, in HD-DVDs favor. Check back in 2 months - nevermind 2 years.

bubblebathgirl: Answer this:

Do you own a HD-DVD player? If you don't, then why you are in a thread specific to HD-DVD? Do you know what trolling is? Do you know that from your excessive posting you are seen as a Blu-Ray PR plant?

Do you know that all of your "statistics" you link (mostly from Blu-Ray.com mind you) are all thrown out the window because these fire sales of HD-DVD players aren't taken into account?

Do you realize that your excessive posting isn't changing anyones mind? (It should be obvious by now from all the comments).

Please, post the answers to all these questions.

EDIT: bubblebathgirl found it insulting that I suggested his actions on this forum put him in the category of fanboy, so I am editing it out.
