i refuse to support both even if i can afford them. im not a tool, one day the war will be over, or something will happen, who cares.. is not like i watch movies as a full time job. is HD is great, but is dont need it to make decitions for me. i also dont want to get a bluray player now, just to realize it will be playback retarded in the near future.

like it was said aboveand before. make your decition and stick by it.. who care what others decide to do.. i think the ones that come here to share info and point of view are ok, but to come in trying to convert people or push your point is seriously retarded. and sometimes funny

I gotta say I'm very annoyed that we still have the black bars on widescreen tv's. Seriously they make is change our tv's from 4:3 to 16:9 and we still have them??

I know it's because they are trying to keep the aspect ratio of the theatrical release but come on. They should make them all 1:85:1 ( believe thats right?) so that it feills your screen. It lookes much better in my opinion and you're not wasting valuable screen space with black bars

Your solution lies here!: http://www.carada.com/Masquerade-Masking-System-Projection-Screens.aspx

Alternatively, you could use the zoom function of your display if you don't like other OARs.

Falcon,

Would you have movie studios cut off 50% of a Cinerama movie orginally filmed in a 2.75:1 ratio so that it fills a 1.78:1 television? That's the same as a pan-and-scan butchering of a 1.85:1 ratio film.

Since movies are made in ratios from about 1.37:1 to 2.75:1 and everything in between, I think you're going to just have to live with the varying aspect ratios on any size television you buy. One size does not fit all.

I watched Disturbia on HD and Shrek the Third in HD. Both filled the screen without any stretching. I enjoyed that so much more even if I did lose a little on the sides. It just feels like I'm getting better value and I enjoy the picture more. I know I'm beating a dead horse here because it probably will never change but it's a pet peeve of mine.

EDIT: How do I send someone a personal message? I'm trying to send Hendrix a link to 200 laserdisks on sale but I can't seem to be able to send him a message.

That's because both of those movies were made to display theatrically at 1.85:1, so they pretty much fit a 1.78:1 (16x9) television screen without losing much. The only way to make a wider, 2.35:1 (or 2.40:1) movie fit a 1.78:1 widescreen TV is to cut off a substantial part of each side of each frame. Most movie fans and videophiles want to see films the way they were shown in theaters, with a really wide screen being really wide. You live with it.

Why does this screen ratio thing even come up? It's been covered so many times here that it's beyond beating a dead horse. I solved the issue years ago by telling people to just make model size theatre curtains that they could attach to their sets with velcro. You can make them adjustable for any screen ratio and plus you get the added feeling of being in a real movie theatre. Do that and your problem is solved!

Kind of like this but you can also make a skirt set to cover the top and bottom:

Hey Falcoln01,

I'd only be interested in hard-to-find MUSIC LaserDiscs (especially Japanese imports) these days, as with my large collection (over 2000 LDs), I'm not in need of more films, since either I probably already have it in my collection already, or have purchased the DVD (or perhaps HD-DVD). But there are music LDs that are rare and collectible, as many have never appeared on DVD (or may have, but with some previous content omitted, etc) .

As for the "black bars" argument, our eyes should be drawn to the content's image, regardless of the ratio it was filmed in (and/or whether there are no black bars or not). Falcon01, I believe your enjoyment of the 1:85.1 ratio [fills the screen] is more due to it appearing to seem "bigger" than say, a movie filmed in the popular 2:35.1 ratio (that has the black bars on widescreen TVs). BUT, if you have a larger-size TV (or even a front-projection setup), the 2:35.1 films wouldn't bother you (even with the black bars) because of how much larger your VIEWING area is for your eyes [more immersion of the image]. Can depend on how close you sit obviously.

But on smaller-size screens [42" and less], those 2:35.1 films do look SMALLER to the eyes, even though you are seeing everything in the original widescreen ratio. So, for 2:35.1 films, it's best to sit as close as possible to the screen, OR to upgrade to a larger-size screen of at least 50" and larger, so that the amount of viewable image is somewhat comparable to that of a 1:85.1 image seen on a 42" TV.

Love,

So, then you're saying they don't make a widescreen TV that is at 2:35:1 ratio? Keep in mind, I really no nothing about HDTVs ratios since I don't own one. I thought they did make HDTVs with different ratios, but I gather they don't?

Even in the early SD DVD days, I too had a hard time getting used to the black bars on top & bottom, but since than I actually prefer to see the full (widescreen) image. My father is still stuborn as hell and is under the dellusion that he's being robbed by widescreen DVDs. I always have to explain he's being cheated by full-screen editions, but the black bars still drive him nutts.

I was kind of hoping that there were different ratio set you could buy, but it appears not. Oh well, I guess my mini curtain idea will still apply. LOL
