Geez, Tim, I hate to drag you into the twenty-first century, but the world standardized widescreen televisions at 16x9 (1.78:1) over a decade ago. So, you get only two flavors: 1.33:1 or 1.78:1.

Of course, you could always buy a projector.

It's kinda funny that TVs when invented matched the Academy radio of films of the time. Then the "war" started, and the theater/studio industry fought back by introducing wider (sometimes extremely wide) aspect ratios to compete and differentiate themselves. Does this mean that film in theaters will go back to Academy aspect to compete against HD displays, then HD displays will go back to Academy, then...

Yes, well that I knew. I was just curious if there were custom sizes in widescreen you could purchase. Again, I don't know much about HDTV or what freatures area available. However, thanks for the sarcasm.

What sarcasm? You're talking to the guy who still uses a Betamax.

I bet we see it at $150 by the end of the year and we already know the chinese brand (what is it, Venturer?) will be sub-$200 this christmas as well.

That's sad when the only other company\country manufacturing your format is the Chinese with a brand that I've never heard of. Last I heard you can't trust them to make simple toys let alone electronics. Have you HDDVD fans boys ever heard "You get what you paid for"

"Have you HDDVD fans boys ever heard "You get what you paid for""

Tony,

I'm glad to see more Blu-ray supporters join the discussion, but would you please keep it a discussion and not an attack? You seem only interested here in provoking a fight. We're trying to stop that kind of thing. Please read our Board rules again.

Dear John,

I was not trying to start an argument and I certainly could find better ways than my last post to start one. But here are the facts. 1st off the vast majority of HD electronic manufactures DO NOT MAKE HDDVD players as a matter fact the 2 that do (samsung and LG), are hybrids. 2nd, like I said I would'nt trust the Chinese to make simple children's toy's (fact), let alone electronic equipment, like I said, " You get what you pay for." 3rd, the average consumer that has invested in a HDTV will more than likely not buy a HDDVD player that has never been heard of, they will research or ask questions before buying it. Personally, I beleive that I represent the average consumer. It took my weeks of studying online about HDTVs and when I finally went to Best Buy it took me another hour and 15 minutes to settle on a TV. But rest assured it wasn't a brand that I've never heard of or poor satisfactory rating. I'm not rich and nor am I stupid either. So in closing I'm not trying to start an argument just trying to say if there is no logical reason to support something but you do, you must be a fan.

"if there is no logical reason to support something but you do, you must be a fan." --Tony

Unfortunately, this is the same flawed argument that HD DVD supporters use about Blu-ray supporters. Obviously, if you like something well enough, you're a fan, and your reasons are logical enough to you personally. Frankly, most people don't give a damn about good picture or good sound quality at all, and they think that anybody who spends good money on an HD television or quality speakers is "illogical."

Maybe we should just leave people to their own format fandom and not belittle them, no matter what format camp they're in.

Anyway, good to have you, Tony. I hope you understand we're trying to avoid fights here.

Nice to be here John, thanks for having me . I'll try to curb my enthusiasm. But saying that the average consumer dosen't care about good picture and sound negates buying into any HD technology (TV or format) and also to say that states that the average consumer is not going to make an educated and informed choice is also being a little condesending. Bottom line if you have the money to buy an HDTV the odds are that you're going to get a player from a well known manufacture, it may not be the most expensive one but it won't be a cheap one from china. By the way I love the Raven's and there is no logical reason to support them this year but I do so I must be a fan.
