Re: New buy one and get one free sale

To be fair, I hope HD DVD has one of these Buy One Get One Free sales. I would buy at least 10 movies.

Please understand that Sony and Toshiba are engaged in a serious business battle here involving quite a lot of money. Both sides will do anything they can to win. Can you blame them? One side lowers its price something, and the other side lowers its price on something else. One side has a big-name release, and the other side offers a two-for-one sale. It's standard business practice to try to undercut your rival. And propaganda, some of it distorted and exaggerated, flows from both sides.

another solid move from the BD camp. I would have done the same thing. It's a shame HD can't get their act together and do something similiar to steal the momentum for the big BD releases (I know there is too many to keep track of.) But if I was running the HD show, I would do the same thing when Pirates 3 or Spider-Man 3 or Die Hard 4 or Close Encounters or Fantasic Four 2 or Independence Day or The Rock or Resident Evil or Castaway or....nevermind, this is tiring.

The question is will this have the same affect as the last one, many people used the last one to buy the movies they missed or didn't feel like paying full price on, not that many BD movies have been released in the past month that would peak intrest in another BOGO sale soon after.

I guess the HD DVD camp doesn't feel any of those movies are a big threat. Spiderman 3 after all was supposed to be huge but it wasn't. It had decent sales but nowhere close to what Sony was hoping for. I guess blurays next big release will be Pirates 3 which again was disappointing in the theatres in terms of reviews so it may not beat Transformers sales for DVD or HD DVD either.

I agree with Sonys logic to have these sales during the week the "other" camp (HD DVD) is having a big release. I just wished HD DVD would do the same thing. Hopefully before Christmas.

I gotta admit it's a sensible move from sony if you look at it from a business point of view. I hope HD DVD do it soon though, I've got an ever growing list of movies I want but can't really afford them! When is Pirates 3 out, if it's not long I might wait and see what happens before I buy something, just in case I can get a bargain. I wonder how well pirates 3 will sell though, after all I don't think its as big a title as Spidey 3 and look how that turned out...

This BOGO promotion seems to be having a substantial impact on the Amazon sales. From what I've counted as of 10:14pm EST on 11-12-07, Blu-ray currently has 118 titles in the top 1000 and 21 titles in the top 100.

HD DVD, by comparison, currently has 15 titles in the top 1000 and 3 titles in the top 100.

What do reviews have to do with sales?

Shrek the Third will be HUGE even though it has a 42% rotten rating at rottentomatos. It made $320,706,665 at the box office, beating out Transformers by a little which itself has a 56% rotten rating. The best new high-budget blockbuster-type movie released on HDM within the last few weeks was Ratatouille. It made only $205,917,649 at the box office and received a 97% fresh rating.

Pirates 3 only made $309,404,152 at the box office (45% rotten), so I agree that it likely wont do any better than similar movies recently released, considering Spiderman 3 made $336,530,303 at the box office (with 62% fresh).

On the bright side, this war is sure bringing down prices for everyone. HDDVD with the players, Blu-ray with the movies.

The question is who is going to run out of money first, Sony or Toshiba, since both of them have to be losing money so far in this contest.
