Sony claims that they sold more PS3s recently than in the prior few months. I haven't seen Sony claim to be outselling the Wii or Xbox, which are still handily outselling everybody.

No game console unit out there will ever beat the sales of this:

I loved Pong. I used to have it on my old (I mean, really old) Atari. (Wasn't it Atari? My mind fades after even a few days, let alone a lotta years.)

Great comment from a poster on Joystiq about the spin Sony is giving.:

Quote:
"As for the PS3, Sony seems to be maintaining its message of "just wait until next month." According to the release, internal tracking puts sales of the system up 192% in the two weeks since the price drop, with 100,000 systems sold in the last week alone. Good news for Sony, surely, but not as good for the 121,000 people who bought the system at a higher price just last month. Sorry, fellas."

First of all the Sony's comments regarding 100,000 systems a week are misleading as they lead you to believe that they mean PS3 systems, which is not the case. They mean PS3 and PS2 systems combined. This can be verified here:
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&sid=amjWQwK2k3Bs

If you are too lazy to follow the link, here is the quote that gives it away:

Quote:
"The price cut and new model helped Sony increase sales of all consoles including the older PlayStation 2 to 100,000 units in the week ended Nov. 11, spokeswoman Kimberly Otzman said in an e-mail."

The 360 sold only 281,000 units its first December. A year later it sold 1,130,000 or 282,500 units per week, with NO PRICE DROP, much less multiple price drops. So I am failing to see how this is a huge breakthough or a sign of good times ahead for Sony's PS3. So why is Stringer BRAGGING about 100,000 units a week in November! WTF?!?!? That's certainly nothing to brag about. That's only 400,000 units a month, a HOLIDAY month a YEAR after launch. That's less than they sold LAST year. They launched in mid-November, so we'll compare last year's December to what they anticipate for this November. Last December they sold 491,000 PS3s. That's 122,750 per week. Now they are on par to...wait for it...sell the same amount or less. This is "the breakthrough [they've] been anticipating." Huh? After all those price drops, the net effect is a ZERO, or even a DECLINE is sales for the PS3?

"Finally, the turning point has been passed."

Microsoft has sold over a million 360s in the 3 months leading up to the two holiday months. A great running start. Remember, last year in August, Spetember and October the 360 only sold 682,000 units compared to 1,170,500 this year in the same three month span. That is an increase of nearly half a million units. Sony, going into their first full holiday season has only sold 371,000 units in the last three months. That is half the units the 360 sold in the three months leading up to its first full holiday. Comparing the August, September, and October of this year, the 360 has sold 800,000 more units than the PS3.

I remember back in 1977, pong was its own game unit, and almost as bulky as a VHS player. It amazingly only played that one game, yet everyone in my neighborhood went nutts to own one. Shortly after, Atari came out with their game unit and their natorius hit "Space Invaders". From that point on, the home video game industry took off. Years later it would be Nintendo, and Sega machines and finally where we are today. A lot has changed since 1977 but video games are as fun as they've always been. My latest adventure is "Lord of the Rings Online" and it is a long way from Astroids or Space invaders. MMO games are far more complex, engaging, long lasting and hours of fun that can go on for years. Really, no matter what platform you pick, they're all a lot of fun and have come a long way since the old pong days -- which were just as exciting back in the day. Remarkable how times change.
