Yeah, $500 is still a huge price to pay for most. I'd rather the PS3 be $199 with no movies. That's more enticing.

Walmart will sell no where near the amout of the A3's that Amazon is selling right now. $499.99 for a ps3 is still expensive and in order to enjoy these movies you have to have a hdtv and I would say most people that shop at Walmart don't even own one yet.

I don't understand this statement when people say that the PS3 is still to expensive. It's only expensive to the people who don't own a HD player at all and are still on the sidelines about who will win this war. For the vast majority of people who do own HDDVD players they bought them when they were between 4 and 500 dollars and get this the 40 gig PS3 is still cheaper than a equally equiped HDDVD with 1.3 HDMI (A35). I can recall when I saw the first gen HDDVD players selling for 400-500 bucks cause I was going to get one. Bottom line is they are still going sell because it is a video game system as well. The real argument should be is standalone Blu ray players are still high, that's the reason why a person should not invest in Blu ray.

tony,
I did a search on Blu Ray players on amazon and the cheapest one is Samsung BD-P1400 for $340. It does internal decoding for all the HD audio formats so folks with analog input receiver will definitely enjoy this piece.
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-BD-P1400-1080p-Blu-Ray-Player/dp/B000TME35W/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1195583194&sr=8-1
Sony BDP-300 for $400 now --

Prices of BD players are coming down and I won't be surprised if it comes down more. $340 is good price for a BD player considering that you don't have to upgrade your receiver to listen to different HD audio formats.

Most people in the United States work under poverty level wages. Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck with literally nothing to put away. Really, stop listening to the American hype and watching TV, which all paints the picture that we're all driving around in Hummers drinking fine wine. Yes, for the majority of Americans, $499 is too high, and so is $200 for most people. And with a slowing retail due to the majority having to tighten their belts because of high energy costs, it's only going to get worse.

Tony Onkyo makes good quality equipment. If you want HDMI 1.3 and TrueHD and DTS HD you gotta get the 605, 705 or 805 models. As for Sony...they overcharge for everything.

Tim,
People have been working under the poverty level and paycheck to paycheck for years, it does not matter. Bottom line is that when XMAS comes it's a whole different thing. Do you honestly think that Little Johnny whom has been in his parents ear all year for a PS3 will be disappointed....NO. Just like people waited in line to buy them at $600 last year others will buy them at $400 this year. My point is that Sony, Toshiba, Wal*Mart, Target, Best Buy, Circuit City.....etc they know that this time of year people spend their last and sometimes go into serious debt, alot are cautious but also take that spending plung, that's why the major retailers and manufactures aggreesively go after you wallet this time of year. Last I checked I don't own a Hummer or sip wine but I do own a 1080p TV and a playstation3 and smart enough not to live like the Jones's.

I think what Tim is pointing out indirectly is that due to credit crunch and mortgage problems - people will be more worried about saving their homes than spending money during Christmas. In last 10 days (including today), the stock market has fallen 8 times. Signs are not good.. unless consumers go bonkers with shopping.. this christmas is a tough one. Forget about HD stuff!

Still, $499 is a lot of money for most people, regardless if some of them are stupid enough to spend it and put theirselves in debt. It would be wiser to teach little Johnny the ethics of living by your means and not spoiling them by teaching them the art of wreckless spending.

Exactly right. I think that any parent going to buy their kids a PlayStation 3 for the holidays, especially parents that don't make a lot of money, will always opt for the $399 version if they don't have to pay the extra $100.

Yeah, look at last year. Get a Wii at $250 or a PS3 at $500, and what happened? I guess it really goes to show you that "price" does drive the consumer market. I'm sure we'll see the same results this year as the Wii is much more reachable across the board for the average family.

I'm in the market for a game console this year and it looks like I'm going to go with the Wii. It comes with the Wii sports and it seems to be a lotta fun for the family. My brother has all three consoles (XBOX 360, PS3 and the Wii) and he tells me they play the Wii the most, then the 360, then the PS3. In fact he RARELY uses the PS3 cause there just aren't any games for it still.

Yes, price is a factor, but the bigger factor for me, as a parent, would be that the Wii system requires some degree of physical activity, which is why it would be the only system I would buy. PS3 is below Wii sales for that reason as much as price, and will stay above PS3 sales until Sony develops something comparable.

Whats going to happen when little Johnny puts in one of his ps2 games and it doesn't work?
I don't understand if this is such a great game system why all the free movies? Are they trying to tell us their games suck so just buy movies? Sounds like the PS3 has an idenity crisses. Doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up.

The way they buy them this year, as gift or as a personal indulgence, will be nothing like the way they bought them last year, which would have been as a personal indulgence supposing they were unable to make some money off of them on eBay.
The "gift-of-the-year" thing died with Tickle Me Elmo, which oddly enough was THE toy that got most people thinking "I'm going to make sure I get whatever the hot toy is next year to sell". Sony was very wise to this...they actually knew that all 400,000 units would be bought if not by those wanting them, then by those wanting to sell them - the sad thing for those who jumped on them is they didn't stop to think if people really wanted a six hundred dollar video game system. Had they only looked back to the Neo Geo, they would have recalled "oh yeah...this is only for people who really love their elite video game consoles.
Anyway, I sip wine on occasion and I drive a Prius, not a Hummer. But when it comes to spending $399 on the Spidey 3 pack it's still too much. I was considering it until they took off the backwards compatibility and the extras...ten free movies with the 40GB system would get me to do it, although I shouldn't...but there's no way in hades I'll do it for the 80GB system at that price.
It's looking as though by the time Sony does make it affordable, Intel's next generation of multicore processors as well as AMD's Phenom processors will be out and they'll be much more affordable and far more versatile [for me] than a dedicated gaming console [slash BD player] and I simply will no longer be interested despite my being very tempted by the PS3 since day one. I will always want one, but I will never own one...that I can ALMOST guarantee.
The PS3 is too expensive, even though I can afford one.

It really comes down to which gamer you are. The Wii is as you say great for the family but lacks killer titles for the more mature gamer. Personally I love the XBOX 360. It has the most impressive line-up of games this fall with titles like:
Halo 3
Call of Duty 4
Project Gotham Racing 4
Forza Motorsport 2
Mass Effect
Lego Star Wars
Scene It
Entire EA Sports Series
And many more with some of the good once exclusive.

Wow this reacks of desperation, the question is, is it to promote Blu ray or the PS3 gamers side.? Sony is already taking a loss on the console and I know Wal-Mart is not doing this out of the kindness of their heart, i mean wallet. Happy thanksgiving all.

I have a friend who works for Wal-Mart and he says that the store is getting reimbursed by the studios for all the free discs. They are also (wisely in my opinion) blocking returns of the free movies so someone can't $250-300 back (they will still exchange faulty discs though). I personally think it is an awesome deal. I have been waiting to buy a PS3 and now I surely will. I played the 360 and since I hate first person shooters and since that is ALL there is on XBOX 360 that is a no go. The Wii gets really boring after a couple of hours plus aside from a couple of games it is a kids system. I am from a small town and I don't think that many people here who even know what Blu-Ray or HD-DVD are so I don't think there will even be a line. This is a great deal by the media that will win out in the end (hopefully).

Let me stress this again, for MOST people, $499 is a lot of money regardless of what temptations Sony can throw at it. Free movies or not, $499 is a big chunk of change for the average consumer. Therefore, no, this is not a great deal.

Isn't the XBOX 360 premium $100 cheaper then the PS3? I would love to see sales stats for the consoles after the holidays. If the PS3 starts getting some games, and actually gives away free games with it (instead of movies) I think sales will start going up. For now it's primary function is as a bluray player in my opinion.

The XBOX 360 with a HDDVD player is more than a 40 Gig PS3 and as far as playing old PS2 games it would make logical sense that of you own a lot of PS2 games that you must already own a PS2, and let's not talk about compatablity issues, you can't even play 360 games without it frying let alone regular XBOX games. A 360 system does'n support the latest HDMI nor HD audio and in everyway is inferior to the PS3. It is all most a first person shooter system, and anyone notice it took a year after the XBOX came out to have really good games. In '08 the PS3 will have a lot of must have titles. No system has ever came out of the gate with killer titles it always takes time. This November marks the first year of PS3. And inspite of the fact that Sony is fighting a war on to fronts it's still hold it's own against two giant companies. Tim stop being so condescending to Wal*Mart customers because according to John Wal*mart and Target count for a huge percentage of HDTV sales in the country.

360 premium ( redesigned- does not brake) and comes with hdmi and cable. 349.00 best buy with two free pretty good games (not first person shooters. lol ) alot cheaper online. the old premiums do tend to brake, but hence the 3 yr warranty, which now microsoft is mostly replacing them.
in 08 ps3 will this.....and will that. sure, when it does ill buy one. for now i take what works. who cares about who ps3 is fighting. thats what they get for tryign to merge movie playback and gaming.

Well Kuco, I hope you pocket's are full and your stomach is empty, cause your're about to shell out and eat your words. But then again you did say that you were rich? All the 360 makes you want to do is make a 360 degree turn and give it back to Microsoft (GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME) I don't buy a game console to give it back for a month. And even if you bought a 360 at $250 and bought the add on you still be paying more. I bet you have a 360 with add on. Kinda wish you waited ha. Toshiba and Microsoft, one can't make disks right and the other can't make disks play right...oh my goodness.

Again, the PS3 is a great machine on paper. But it has major flaws as a gaming console. The main thing being that it is to expensive and that it lacks games. Another real problem is that was developed without third party game developers being asked on what they want. This has resulted in fewer games and those that arrive comes later than on other platforms and often has the same graphics and features as the XBOX 360. Not better and in some cases worse. It is correct that a gaming console needs time to mature but the PS3 has been on the street for a year and enters its second holiday season. Where is the blockbuster title? Just name one. When Halo 3 was released even the most expensive ($129 a piece) limited edition of that game sold more than the best selling game on PS3.

Henning,
I'd have to agree, setting aside the Blu-Ray movie playback for a second. The PS3 has not been a great game machine. There's nothing about it that screams must buy for me. I can get most of the games that I want for my 360 and they look the same and in the case of Madden 08 look better (360 runs at 60 fps as opposed to 30 fps on PS3). Plus most game developers have said it's a dog to program for and it's internet service is even worse to program for. EA the largest video game company in the world recently said they will not dedicate separate teams for PS3 versions of games. Rather they will just use the 360 version as a base. So there will be no graphically differences between the two. So for all it's vaunted power no EA title will ever take advantage of it because EA does not have the time for it.
A friend of mine has (up until recently) been a Sony boy for life. He's had his PS3 for eight months. He's owned all previous PS's and naturally he bought the new one. He recently traded it in because he said there's nothing he wants to play for it right now and he's tired of waiting for something good to come out.

Also the 360 looks good on paper but I can't see the faith in a faulty machine and where is the HDDVD software for games (oh maybe next gen), an HDDVD add on IMO shows a lack luster of support by Micosoft for HDDVD. If it was fully intergrated with HDDVD there probabaly would be an end to this war already, with HDDVD as the victor. This is what happens when you want to be first in line, xbox first, HDDVD first but like I said in the previous post "what's next from these two companies."

Tony the reason Microsoft didn't include the HD DVD add-on to their XBOX 360 systems was because they didn't want to force it on consumers the way Sony did with the PS3 and bluray. They have stated this clearly in interviews (I'm not going to search it for you).
So the people that just want a gaming console have one, if you also wanna watch high definition movies you can get the HD DVD add-on. It's pretty simple.

Rock Star isn't a PS3 exclusive, Neither is Devil May Cry. Also you bashed the 360 for being nothing but first person shooters but you list a Three First person shooter as a game to get on the PS3 (Killzone 2, Unreal Tournament 3, and Haze).

Gears of War came out last year in November. 360 came out in 2005. For first year or so only one game was good on 360 - Oblivion. Pretty much everything sucked. If you goto IGN, and see editors choice award list -- all games in top 20 are shooters except Mass Effect, Oblivion, Forza Motorsport. Bioshock is a shooter as well.
http://xbox360.ign.com/index/choice.html?ordering.order=desc&ordering.attribute=article.review_date&constraint.bool.article.is_editors_choice=is_true&constraint.locale=us&sort.attribute=article.overall_rating&sort.order=desc
Last five games that I have finished on 360 are - Gears of War, COD 4, Bioshock, Rainbow Six:Vegas, and Halo 3. All shooters.
Honestly, state of both the consoles - 360 & PS3 sucks pretty much at this point. Both consoles lack future games .. We will see ..

First, about Gears of War. The XBOX 360 was introduced in 2005 and Gears came out in Nov. 2006. With my math that makes it XBOX's second holiday season... not ?
I agree on the first person shooters but what about....:
EA Sports Series (Looks better on XBOX 360)
Forza Motorsport 2 (Only on XBOX 360 and the best racing game I have ever played)
Beautiful Katamari (Only on XBOX 360)
Ace Combat 6 (Only on XBOX 360 for now)
Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action (Only on XBOX 360)
Viva Pinata (Only on XBOX 360)
All I say is that if you look on getting some games played the XBOX 360 (right now) has the best games and the best online service by far. It even has better or the same visuals in many cases. If you don't want to use it for games but only movies the PS3 might be a good offer. Personally I would place my bet on a stand-alone player when they get more profile 1.1 and 2.0 players finished.

I agree on the first person shooters but what about....:
EA Sports Series (Looks better on XBOX 360)
Forza Motorsport 2 (Only on XBOX 360 and the best racing game I have ever played)
Beautiful Katamari (Only on XBOX 360)
Ace Combat 6 (Only on XBOX 360 for now)
Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action (Only on XBOX 360)
Viva Pinata (Only on XBOX 360)

The XBOX 360 is a nice system, but there is something to say about their failure rates. I can't see buying a product from a a company that sacrifices the Quality Assurance process and does not fully test their product just to get the up on the next gen market. That's why sometimes it's better to wait as a consumer and a manufacture. IMO the next game console from Microsoft will not sell as well because of the 360 failure rate.

Simply put, I bought a Wii to play games. And I bought a Toshiba HD DVD player to watch Hi Def movies. The 2 should have never been brought together. I mean if you are going to spend all that ching on an overated game system. Why not just buy the stand alone Blu Ray player. It is less expensive and you won't be ticked off that you got dooped over the PS3 when you should have just kept your PS2.

I did not want a Nintendo Wii, it doesn't fit my style of gamming. There is virtually no online sudstance to the system what so ever. I prefer to have online gamming and slinging my arms around like I'm 10yrs. old isn't me either. The games I like are on either PS3 or 360. The Wii fits my son's style of play, he likes to run around like a chicken with it's head cut off with a controller in his hands, NOT ME. The 360 has a poor failure rate and PS3 does not, my choice was clear, now whether it was a good investment or not we'll see, I think it was. But you said the HDDVD player ans the Wii should never be bought together (well that was your decision), IMO why should'nt they especially if the Wii doesn't even have DVD playback. Here's the kicker I NEVER OWNED A PS2.

I have owned my XBOX 360 for a year now and I have had absolute no problems whatsoever.
If I did have a probem, I wouldn't fret it though, since the XBOX 360 has a THREE-YEAR WARRANTY. This even means that any XBOX sold to date can be replaced by Microsoft 100% free of charge. For sure, there were problems with 360's overheating when it first came out, but it is good to see that Microsoft has addressed these problems with such an amazing warranty.

Kucoloco,
I have had (I swear to this statement), three people close to me, stepson, cousin, and one friend, all have needed their 360 repaired so why would I invest in a machine that doesn't have a good personal track record? Where is the logic?

Ok first Tony, I bought the Wii for my 8 year old daughter for this Christmas. And I bought it so I could enjoy playing wholesome video games with her. I am glad she will run around like a chicken with her head cut off, she is a kid. I enjoy my time with my daughter, thats why I purchased it.
And what I meant, is that video game consels ( IE. The PS3) should not have integrated the Blu Ray with the console. You buy a game consel to play games and you buy DVD players to watch movies. And as for the PS3, well that hunk of useless plastic has had it's share of problems itself. Hmm never owned a PS2, well maybe you should, it is the hottest thing SONY has on the gaming market now.

Your last statement does'nt make since because you said you bought it to play games but if it's for your little girl, why not buy a HDDVD player, obviously you want to play Wii more than she does and since it does not offer and add on player you have no choice, so my conclusion is the whole arrangement is for you. Once again logic prevails...but hey invisiblebiker it's all good.......it's all good.

Kucoloco,
Like I said a billion times before. The XBOX 360 is a nice system what makes it fail short of a great system is the failure rates. If this was an issue with the PS3 I would not have bought one. I REFUSE TO BUY SOMETHING THAT SOON OR LATER I MIGHT HAVE TO SEND IT BACK, Microsoft is a software company with no track record in electronics that's why in 2 1/2 yrs they'll be talking about a new system. That's why the PS1 and 2 lasted for so long because SONY is an electronics company. Do you here about SONY developing software........no. Microsoft can't even make a descent working version of Vista. Again rushing to the market, Microsoft's biggest enemy is that they really have no competition on the software front and they think that will carry over to video games as well. Another example hundreds of thousands of the Halo 3 special editions had scracthes on them and would not play. SONY may overprice but at least you know that it's a fair chance that their electronics will work. I guess that when their new system comes out you'll buy that one as well, but if you're happy with your 360 than I'm happy for you too. Like the SONY ceo said, "we are trying to win this war on merit." on both fronts.

yeah, the the ps2 WAS reliable. So was the other one I bought to replace the one that died 2 years later. AND the one after that I bought another 2 years later. Except for the fact it stopped working, it was flawless!
BTW-if anyone was still unclear, the site updated and it IS, in fact, 10 movies in store and the 5 free by mail. So good luck to anyone attempting to buy one.

But Tony, you are forgetting that PlayStations get outdated pretty quickly, and when the new ones come out they aren't backwards compatible. Add to the fact that there aren't very many great games to choose from, and your argument isn't very valid.

Ummm...didn't the PS1 have a whole mess of Playstations returned because they stopped working after like 15,000 hours for no reason? Also the first Playstation had a problem with overheating. So I wouldn't exactly call the PS1 reliable.

my elite, or my friends elites are perfect. so i guess people wanna take their chances with a system that is fun and brakes (how you say.. even though they all dont) than with one that does not.. and has no games

This arguement is so rediculous.
I've had two 360's. One has died twice with the RRoD. Microsoft has replaced it both times, the other unit hasn't failed yet. If it fails, oh well, I don't play it every day, its got fun games, and they are covering the cost and taking a $2 billion dollar loss for their heatsink design flaw.
I'd rather have all the games I do play, than a system twice the cost (as it would have been a year ago) with no games to play.
People who are judging it on its failure rate have a horrible arguement to hold on to for several reasons:
1) In July MS switched to a new heatsink/heatpipe design to correct the primary failure reason
2) In September, MS switched the CPU to 65nm which reduces the heat
3) Microsoft has replaced free of charge (INCLUDING RETURN SHIPPING) all dead xbox 360s
4) Why get a console if a console is going to sit there because there are no games for it....atleast a 360 dies because it overheats because you are playing games on it
You may say thats a pretty bad record but, consider this: It originally shipped with a 1 year warranty. The 3 year was to make up for their mistake. Its been an average of 11 months between failurs on my original box, and they specifically stated they will replace it with one of the newer units due to it being my second occurance. I say they are going above and beyond what was required of their 1-year warranty to ensure people get a product that works for them.
Regarding comments on the Wii....the Wii has been proven time and time again to be in a completely different market than the xbox 360 and PS3. Only reason I bought mine was for the virtual console....I ended up buying Wii games to try to justify owning the console, but most of them sucked and ended up on the shelf

Gentlemen, THE PS2 WAS FAR FROM RELIABLE. Remember the Disc Read Error issues? The PS2's were famous for them and the kicker is Sony only gave you a 3 month warranty on the PS2 so if you got the disc read error after that, you had to pay $100 (at least in Canada it was $100) to fix it. Not only that, they wouldn't fix it, they would just give you another console that has already been fixed so you don't really know what condition it was in. I personally take very good care of my electronics so I would want the same unit back.
I personally followed this guide to fix two PS2's with Disc Read Errors...
http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars
I gotta say that link above worked like a charm. I was able to fix the Disc Read Errors easily so I was very thankful for that link.
For kicks, heres "The unofficial: Disc Read Error Guide" on Playstations own site...

Ok I am like a few days late and a dollar short on my reply, but hey I had a busy weekend. To reply to Tony, did'nt the PS3 have a boat load of BUGS? I never had problem one with my X BOX 360, and it still outsells the PS3. And speaking of this 10 free movie deal. Wal Mart on the commercial said there were only 2 per store? WOW only 2 per store, that will up the total amount of Blu Ray, ummmm I mean PS3 players sold. (Note to SONY, you either want to advance with your PS3 Plastic Hunk of A Wonder Machine or you want to attempt to make Blu Ray a staple in everyones home ) Either way, SONY will lose and is already loosing the gaming war.

When a store says minimum that's retail speak for "that's all that we'll have" very rarely will a store have more then that. First of all Wal Mart and Other Retailers are only alloted a certain number of PS3's per store. So I wouldn't count on going to your local wal mart and them having like 50 PS3's it's just not going to happen.

Ah I'm a little late in this posting thread-but wanted to clear up a few things.
I took advantage of the PS3 10-BluRay in-store 5 mail-in movie deal- there were at least ~15 80 gig PS3's that were available. Heck stores have them overflowing due to the lack of game development and delays and price and (fill in the blank). I personally bought one mainly for the BluRay movies- I have owned my HD-DVD add on and love it--but I was missing out on quite a few movies exclusive to BluRay. My PS3 will be mainly used for BluRay- maybe a few exclusive games for the PS3 but any other games are for my XBOX360. PS3 may have the horsepower in it's CPU but the GPU sucks compared to the XBOX360's- which is way better. Also it seems that the game developers develop first on XBOX or PC then port over to the other consoles. I hear that the PS3 is a biotch to develop on (anyone read the news about the Orange Box problems?). And sony cutting the dev package price in half begging game studios to develop on thier platform.
It seems like the PS3 is doing well on the BluRay- but it seriously lacks exclusive games that are good. Well supposedly it will be around for 9 more years so that should be time enough for Sony to impress us with a few things.
HD-DVD or BluRay I am covered now- let the high def war rage on to keep studios offering great deals to consumers!
