I was lucky enough NOT TO HAVE THE 'RED RING OF DEATH' from my xbox 360, but two of my co-workers received it after a year of use.

Reliability (or lack, thereof) is spread widely... BUT MORE ON THE XBOX 360.

I never had any problems with my PS2, and I used it to watch movies ALL the time, except that the image looked darker, and the component cables wouldn't work anymore, everything worked fine. It was a reliable machine.

the current line of 360 works perfectly. and the Elite has always been solid since the april launch.
