I was just wondering if you guys were looking for another movie reviewer. To be honest, I haven't reviewed any movies before, but I do have some writing experience. I have written quite a few game reviews and strategy-style articles for Scrye Magazine and IQ Gamer - so I definitely would be interested in sharing my two cents on movies that I've seen (either DVD or HD DVD).

That's great that you're interested, but be warned that this is the panel you'll be up against to get the job:

Ok I want in on this. I wrote for my High School newspaper, The Tiger Beat, so where do I sign up? I think the last movie review I did was Parasite in 3D. LOL ( That was a cheesy horror movie from the 80's)

Such enthusiasm! I love it!

So let me take you "inside DVD Town." Unlike other sites, where an editor assigns different titles for review, we assign studios for our writers to cover. When we have studios that aren't being covered (as we do now), then we are indeed looking for new writers. If we have all the bases covered, then we file away a writer's application for future use.

Though all of our current reviewers have either been film school students/grads, English teachers, or long-time reviewers for other arts/sites, we do have an open mind and will consider "hiring" anyone who writes well and with flair, doesn't summarize a movie but only gives a sense of what a film is "about," offers insights and analysis, and is a dependable workhorse. Now, I put "hiring" in quotation marks because at the present time, DVD Town is a not-for-profit site based in Denmark with editorial offices in the U.S. We do not pay reviewers. Those of us who write for the site do so out of a love of movies and a commitment to writing itself. And you have to like ALL movies, because those who begin writing for DVD Town are assigned smaller (sometimes little-known) studios and then work up to majors as openings are created. We're looking for people who are serious about film and writing about film, not hobbyists who think this might be a "cool" way to get free DVDs. And though film criticism is subjective, we are looking for people who seem to have "right on" sensibilities when it comes to interpreting film. I know that John and I typically spend one night watching the film, one night watching bonus features, and then anywhere from two to five hours writing up and posting the review and support materials. In other words, every review you read at DVD Town takes an average of eight hours to produce. Do you have the time commitment?

Every person on the staff of DVD Town had to go through the same informal application process--myself included. Simply write us via the reader feedback option at the bottom of every page, http://mail.google.com/a/dvdtown.com/, and indicate your desire to apply. The next step is to look at our database for a title that we now list, e.g., "High School Musical," but which has no review. Look in your collection, then see if you have something we still need a review for. Then, write an audition review in the DVD Town style/format, listing the Video, Audio, Extras, and Final Thoughts in boldface. Our reviews tend to fall in the 1000-word range, but we are not word-counters. If you cover the subject well, we're happy and so are our readers.

If you ramble on and on or are too wordy, if you reveal too much about the film, or if you just don't seem to have an understanding of film basics, then that's not so good. Same with the review that's underdeveloped. We expect that our writers will practice good grammar and syntax. You should know up-front that writers also have to add titles to the database many times, and also size and upload cover art, so you'll need a program like Photoshop. All of this takes additional time.

Once we receive a sample audition review, John, Henning, and I read it, reach a conclusion, and then with Henning's approval I will let the new writer know that he/she has been "hired" (there's those quotation marks again!). If the news is not good, we of course inform you with regrets, and hope you'll continue to visit DVD Town.

Anyway, that's how you get to write for DVD Town!
