In a word "NO" optical cannot support the bandwith needed for any HD audio. Only HDMI.

Bigdog you may be able to find the 605 on ebay for around $400. I know someone that got it for just over $400 with shipping included on ebay but I just checked and it looks like its closer to $500 at the moment. You just gotta keep checkin. Also you may wanna check amazon.
Just remember the HD A3 does not have the 5.1 direct outputs like the HD-XA1, HD-XA2 and HD-A35 do. The only way you will be able hear the HD audio on the A3 is with a receiver that decodes Dolby True HD and DTS HD using HDMI like Tony stated.

as Tony said HD audio can only be transferred thru HDMI or 5.1 analog outputs. However since you are getting the A3 you won't need to buy a receiver that can decode HD audio. (The A3 cannot send HD audio bitstream). There are plenty of receivers with HDMI inputs that can except audio that are cheaper then the 605. The A3 can convert the HD audio to PCM and send it thru HDMI. As long as the receiver can accept audio thru the HDMI input you'll still get the benefit of HD audio. This is essentially the same process as the 5.1 analog outputs. Except that the converted audio track is sent thru the HDMI cable as opposed to six separate RCA cables.

I wasn't aware you could still do it through HDMI with a receiver that does not decode the HD audio. Can the A2 also do this? Convert the audio to PCM I mean.
It will sound just as good as going through the analogue 5.1 inputs?

Yes any of the HD-DVD players can do this. Even the A1. Like I said it you have to have a receiver that can except audio thru the HDMI port. You have to change the players settings to PCM but it'll work.

If you do decide to get an HDMI reciever make sure it's not HDMI pass through, this means that the reciever does no processing of the HDMI signal like decoding and upconverting it just passes the video to the TV with no audio. If your not sure always go to s store like Best Buy and ask to see several recivers that processes the HDMI signal, find the one that best fits you then search the web for the best price AMAZON is a good place as Falcon mentioned.
